Subject:Sound forge hangs, when Ilok key is not presant

Hello

I just installed Sound forge pro 10 Update, onto my vista 64 bit system.
As I use sevral computer systems, i didn't have my Plug ins Keys plugged in to this system.
It seems the Waves bundle package I have, is stopping the boot up of Sound forge pro 10 when the plug in Ilok Key is not installed.

I do not think this should be an issue.
I've tried a few things before comming to this conclusion.

Rebooting vista.
turning off My secruity software.
And watching the boot progress of sound forge pro 10.
I can't say the program freezes on the same plug ins....but it seems when the plug ins are loading, some will hang...and some times when the Ilok Key isremoved...I'm given a selection to continue or quit..this seems to help the program go to the next plug in...
But it still gets stuck or hangs after clicking quit...when it finds the next keyless Plug in.

The solution is to plug in the ilok key.

I could think of some situations where this could cause problems.

Just thought it might be important to let you guys know.

Yours truly
Les

Sounds like actually a Waves problem, but Sony might be able to provide a work-around....

Strictly speaking it's not so much a Waves problem as it is a dongle problem that's nature-of-the-beast with them (dongles). They have to be present all the time if you want to use them or have a project with them in there. Possibly one of the worst copy protection ideas on a pc ever.

The way it should work and does work with other apps is that if your iLok is not inserted your app should still start up but without authorizations for plug-ins that require the iLok. So in this case, Sound Forge should start up but none of the plug-ins requiring iLok authorization will be available.

This sounds more like a SF problem not progressing start up when a plug-in authorization is missing.

Yes Greg...I believe it should start up with or with out the plug ins dongle / iLok key...
I have found this also happens with Vagas 8.0.

Yah a Sony issue for sure.

Oh I hate dongles too!

That is why I use PT m powered / Sony / products instead of Steingberg crap!
Yes PT uses Ilok...but it was the only second choice to Steinbug at the time...
Although they (STEINBUG team) seem to have re-recoded their software to MS windows to a better limelight of stability, and Got rid of the printer dongle for the ILOK?....They still employ that dongle thing ...and everyone is a criminal, hacker, pirate, until proven Dongled paid.

Now if every software developer and plug in coder wanted this dongle /ilok employed for their products...how many USB ports would be full of said dongle devises?

I have four already.....and like everything else man makes...it breaks down over time and use...

It really is a stupid ideal...The dongle thing!...But people buy into it...and it cost more to develope it, and deploy...making the software more costly~~$$$ to the consumer!...and now the flaws show up here and there!

When a company employs the trust system...
And they offer the best possible software and support, and activation through forums and registered user accounts ID.
The word of mouth and the sale of the cheaper working software grows!
Good product at a fair price...that does the Job well......that sells more than bells and whistles with protection devise that fail from time to time...etc!

Now I know Sony isn't really the best of the best....But it does do a good job!

Fixing this little problem might make it a bit better for the absent minded ILok key holders out there.

Thanks for the replies.

After installing a Sony app, when first fired up they go through your Windows install looking for installed plugins... this isn't a quick & dirty scan, but actually opens for example files needed by those plugins. Any one of those supporting files can cause it to hang just like a broken plugin. Once that initial scan is over though, Sony apps go to the quick & dirty type until that app is reinstalled or updated.

During this involved scan if/when plugins don't work, regardless the reason, removing the plugin [renaming/moving/deleting files] allows the app to start & build it's internal list in the registry. After that you can put the plugin files back, & everything should work normally. Search the forums & you'll find this has come up from time to time.
