Subject:Question about Using Songs in a Game...

Hello, everyone.

I am a student in Game Design, and I was wondering what the terms are for using the songs that we compose under ACID Music Studio.

I understand that the loops are not our property, so that lead to me wondering if it would even be possible to use the songs I've made for a game that I need to create for a school project. We do not have any plans to sell this game, as per my understanding.

If I CAN use the songs, what licenses would I need to follow?

Thank you for your help.

If you composed the music, then the songs are yours to do with as you please. You can use them in a game, movie, website....whatever. BUT.... it must be your composition. You doing a cover of Thriller and putting it in a game is something you CANNOT do.

The loops are sold to you to be used in your music. There is no licenses you need to worry about. When you compose the song, even using loops, the unique song you created is then copyrighted by you.

In some rare cases I think are are some loops sold by some companies that this is not the case. But in that rare situation it is plainly stated when you by the loops.

Realize that much of the music for TV shows is created with loops that the composers bought. Because of time constraints in that industry, it is quite common today.

And BTW.... I seldom use loops myself, but think they are a great way to get people interested in making music.....

So make an awesome game, and you create an awesome soundtrack!

Thanks, Bremen. I really appreciate your help with this. It'll make life SO much easier for this project.

Honestly, I'm not surprised that composing by loops is so common; it's a great method and easy to do. It makes perfect sense, really.

I'll keep a close eye out for the copyrighted ones.

Much appreciated!

Just to be clear :)

Loops that you buy on a CD or buy as a download or come with Acid are copyrighted. The LOOP itself is copyrighted. So you cannot take those loops and sell them to others. But, you can take those loops, make a song out of it, and sell the song to others. ..... make sense?

Just to confirm Bremen's clarification - the only thing you can't do with Acid is put out a single unaltered loop - this is copyright, but as soon as you do something such as combine with another loop, it becomes your composition and is copyright free.
