Subject:What?!! No Clip Indicator?!!

Just went to record something for the first time in Sound
Forge 5.0, and I was shocked to find the Clip Indicator was
missing. I used to LOVE that thing! I mean, I actually
found it useful. How could they forget/remove the Clip
Indicator for 5.0?!!

(sigh)

I hope they bring it back. Does this bother anyone else?

The clip indicator is not gone. I own SF 5 and enjoy
watching the pretty red lights go on and off each time I
record or play something. Where are you wishing to see the
indicator? During playback or recording? You may have it
disabled. Please describe your problem more clearly...

I can't get the clip indicator to show up during recording
(16 Bit). It pops up on the play meters wile playing an
overmadulated wav., however. I spoke to a rep recently,
and he said people have mentioned my problem to him a few
times already. He also said the problem would be corrected
in the next free upgrade for 5.0 (apparently to correct all
the bugs we "lab rats" are finding with the new program at
our expense). Because I was having trouble getting a clean
recording in 16 Bit with my AudioMedia III sound card as
well, he suggested I try recording in 24 Bit. Maybe the
clip indicator will show up then -- I'll have to try it
Monday morning. May I ask what bit-depth you use when
recording? Maybe that's the key.

The Audiomedia III is not a 24-bit soundcard.

I used to have problems getting a clean recorded sound out
of my AMIII in Sound Forge as well - not just SF, though,
but almost anything. Had to use Digidesign's Session to
record everything - but that was fixed in a new driver
release by Digi. Have you tried the latest drivers?

Oy vey, you guys! My company got the AudioMedia III card
with Digi ProTools(Toolbox package)before I was hired. I
told them I'm more Sound Forge oriented and began working
with their Sound Forge 4.5 XP USING the existing AudioMedia
III card -- WITH NO PROBLEMS -- I recorded in 16-bit, saw
my little clip indicator -- really, no problems at all with
the AudioMedia III. Once I got the Sound Forge 5.0
upgrade, I lost the clip indicator, and my 16-bit
recordings were no longer clean, but was able to play all
the 24-bit waves that were created in ProTools before I
arrived. So I don't know why you say the AudioMedia III
can't handle 24-bit stuff. I even recorded a 5 second/24-
bit wav. with SF 5.0, just to test it out.

This all happened at the end of Friday, so I shall run more
tests on Monday morning, but please, keep you hints,
suggestions, and comments coming -- I'm just an editor, not
a techie.

I didn't say it can't handle 24-bit files, just that it
doesn't have 24-bit converters... it has 18-bit
converters. (off topic... I've yet to hear a 24-bit card
recording in 24-bit that sounds better...so don't go
getting all worried about the "I must have 24-bit because
the world is going 24-bit" nonsense)

Just two questions: have you tried obtaining the latest
AMIII drivers? When you record and have SF set to 16-bit
mode, you get problems and no clip indicator... when you
record and have SF set to 24-bit mode, do you have the same
problem?

I unfortunately can't test anything for you. The AMIII
doesn't work in Win2k which is my primary OS on my dual
boot machine - I can only use it when I boot in Win98 to
use Pro Tools LE. Please see other threads re: SF's
registration system to see why I have a problem here. Same
machine, same one at a time user... need to register twice!?

Okay. Recording in 24-Bit worked! I got a clean recording
with the Audiomedia III sound card, AND the missing clip
indicators came back!!!

I guess I'll just convert my 24-bit recordings to my usual
16-bit after the fact.

Thanks for the help, everyone!

this is a bug in 16 bit and I believe will be fixed in the
next update.

That is correct, it will be fixed in version 5.0a, which
will be released shortly.
