Hi, does anyone know if the plugins bundled with Sound Forge 10 are usable with Acid 7 and Vegas 8 or are they restricted for using in Sound Forge. Thanks!

Very good question!

Most if not all of the FX plugins end up in a folder called "Shared Plug-Ins" that are available to any Sony software that can utilize them.

For information regarding specific plugins you would need to contact Tech Support, however I have found that anything from Sound Forge I ever needed to use in Vegas was available, and vice versa. You can always "Open a copy in Sound Forge" and save as a take in Vegas as needed.

Although I own Acid I rarely use it, so although the same assumption prevails, I cannot advise you with regards to specific FX plugins in that application.

SF10 / VP9b:
It appears some do, some don't.
eg "elastique Timestretch" appears in VegasPro, but the newer iZotope 2 bundle "Mastering Exciter" & "Mastering Imager" do not. I have not had time to compare them all yet though....

[edit - since Christo just beat me - I'll scope this to AP7]
AP7
As an example - elastique timestretch = yes.

(comes under name "Sony elastique Timestretch)

The reason the iZotope plugs won't appear is probably because of the licensing deal with Sony. Which is kind of weird because you'd think the license would be written so that they could be used in any Sony product that could possibly run them. I can see restricting them so an outside program like Sonar, DP, Live, Pro Tools couldn't run them.

I wouldn't be suprised if the next updates to AP / Vegas allow them to see the remaining plugs..

Thanks, folks, for all the replies. perhaps it depends upon the original vendor? I've contacted Sony support and will post what I hear back from them here.

Hi, you are correct. I just got a message from Sony Support that says:

"When a new update is released for the current software versions, Acid Pro 7 and Vegas Pro 9, the plug ins will work in those as well. The plug ins will not work in previous versions of the software nor current versions before they receive an update"

This is a nuisance for me as I skipped Vegas 9. I guess its one way to encourage users to upgrade. In my case I would have upgraded to SF10 if I could have used the plugins with what I have, but now I'm left thinking about it and whether my usage justifies the asking price.

That's for you to decide, but do you feel that they should produce updates to previous versions just so that the new bundled plugs can work ? How many versions back - Vegas 8 ? Why not 7,6,5,4 etc as well ?

They have to draw the line somewhere of they would be spending all their time updating old versions and never get anything new done !

Hi, what I don't fully get is why they need an update at all. Surely, the software has the capability to allow plugins or it doesn't? Or are the plugins included with SF10 a completely new type? If I install a soft synth then I don't have to wait for a Sony update to get it to work. I just rescan the plugins folder and it becomes available. Anyway, to answer your question if there has to be a cut-off point then I'd say the current version and the previous one. That way one or two bugs could be fixed as well. I don't think users should be forced to upgrade to get bug fixes. Cheers!

Guesses:
1. The iZotope-Sony deal is that the plug-ins ship with SF and can be used under SF and other Sony apps only. This is why I can't use the mastering compressor (which I love) with SONAR.
2. To make an iZotope plug-in visible and usable, the Sony app must give the correct secret handshake. This would be coded into the app and would require an update if the handshake were mistakenly omitted.
