That is not a requirement of the software. Both can be installed and will co-exist on the same computer if you want.

I personally prefer 'out with the old, in with the new' and uninstall programs I no longer need to avoid confusion and clutter. Your VMS8 projects will work just fine in VMSP9, so feel free to remove... or not. It's up to you!
