I have SF5.0,Vegas Video,ACID,Siren & SF4.5XP/CD Architect all operating on a PIII 700/512MB WinME platform. They all are functioning as they should. I have had no problems working in a WinME environment. Bill |

I'm also running several sonic foundry programs on winME and other company software as well no problems anyway Idon't think you can buy a computer with 98 on it now without special order because when Win ME came out Win 98 is officially discontinued |

Rach, You're in the middle of a tough decision. Win98 and WinME are both very similar, but there are some key differences that you need to be aware of before making your decision. Let me break it down for you: WINDOWS 98 - AN OLDY BUT A GOODY (Ff you pick this, get Windows 98 SECOND EDITION! First edition isn't worth your time. They are very different.) ADVANTAGES: - Stable environment: Beats the stuffing out of previous Windows versions - Improved multimedia stability: No question, it's THE choice for consumer level editing, mastering, etc (next to WinME). - Improved PnP interface: It's rare to find a device that won't install on the first try. - Excellent value: costs less than WinME with about the same features - Still supported: Upgrades and patches still available - Stong network support: Albeit, not perfect, but generally pretty good. DISADVANTAGES: - Real mode DOS: It's base is still running off the ol' klunky DOS platform. This results in the "blue screens of death" that you'll often see. - 4GB file limit: It doesn't support NTFS file partitions, only FAT32, so if you're into video editing, all your presentations will be limited to about 18-20 minutes. - Not the BEST networking: It's a dated product, so there's better stuff out there now WINDOWS ME - A VIABLE ALTERNATIVE (Do not upgrade to this from Win98. Go full version for stability reasons.) ADVANTAGES: - No real mode DOS!: Finally, that ancient piece of software is gone for good. You computer will now boot faster and crash less. - Multimedia stability: Just as good, if not better than Win98SE. Interfaced also streamlined for more less latency and a more sturdy interface. - Excellent networking: Built to resemble Win2K. Highly versatile and stable. - Faster: It just is. - Stability: Hardly crashes. Rare to see the "blue screen of death". Less memory problems. (Note, that if you UPGRADE to this version, it is likely to have problems. I tried upgrading myself but couldn't keep my computer from "eating itself alive". It's not this way with everyone, but be cautious.) - A very nice system recovery program: Basically, you can take a snapshot of your hardware/software setup, and if you are trying to change something, and REALLY screw things up royally, just restore your machine to an old profile, and VOLA, everything's back in order. VERY HELPFUL TOOL. DISADVANTAGES: - No real mode DOS: If you have old programs that REQUIERED real mode DOS, you might as well throw them away. WinME can still run the DOS box (emulated), but no real mode DOS programs can be run (but really, how of those do you have/need?) - Driver issues: If you have ancient hardware that used old Win95 drivers, or lacks support for WinME, you MIGHT run into a problem (key word: MIGHT). The WinME CD contains drivers from all the Win9x versions, but still take this into account. - Software issues: Some software simply refuses to run on WinME because it's not programmed to use the advanced interface. The only software that will suffer from this is really old junk that wasn't programmed well in the first place. - File size limit: Like Win98, files are limited to only 4GB. There's your comparison. Keep in mind, both versions are based on the Windows 9x kernel, so they're very similar. However, they've also got their differences. Pick wisely based upon your needs and the needs of your software, and you should be fine. Best wishes to you, Nick LaMartina |
