Anyone uploading content to Vimeo?

Pullmanite wrote on 7/28/2009, 1:00 PM
I've been uploading 720x480 video up onto Vimeo and have issues with A/V sync. I have to move my audio 3 frames ahead of the video to get it to be in sync (as well as I can tell). I'm using 8.0c and rendering as Mainconcept MP4, Baseline, 29.970 fps, progressive, VBR 700k-1Mbps. Now I've got someone telling me the audio goes out of sync if they scrub around on the material once it's uploaded to Vimeo, but I don't have the same issue there. Nevertheless, I'm trying to figure out why I still need to push my audio three frames ahead.

See anything I'm doing wrong?

I upload Standard Def to Vimeo. I had an issue some months back with audio losing sync only after 15 min or so into playback -- resolved at that time by encoding at 30fps. Lately I've been using these settings with good results, even on longer pieces than 15 min.:

SD Render settilngs for Vimeo

I did a recent upload at these settings. There is some lip sync about 25 seconds into this. You be the judge. Sync looked good to me all the way through to the end.

I wonder now if the profile needs to be set to "Main" (I had it set to "Baseline.) I also found this template from a Vimeo tech recommending settings the same as yours except bitrate (since her template is for HD.)

Doing some testing right now.

Hmmm... sync is still off. Looks fine on my Mac Pro running Safari under Leopard the first time, but each successive run is out of sync. If I play it in Firefox on the same computer running XP via VMWare, it's out of sync. Tried it on another XP computer and the same thing.

Are you guys seeing the same sync issue?

FYI, xberk, your video upload looks just fine. Not sure what my issue is. I used the exact same settings as you provided except the video bitrate is VBR 768kbps - 1Mbps.

Not seeing any sync issue down here.
If you play it once and it's in sync then your file is in sync.
If you replay it or do anything else and it goes out of sync it's not your problem. This is something beyond your control. I'd suggest you try doing the same thing with other videos on Vimes, see if they loose sync under the exact same circumstances.

Thanks for checking, Bob. I've uploaded a few different versions of the same video with different settings and sync seems to be problematic here on all of them now. Maybe I just need to get some sleep. If anyone else is willing to look at the video I linked to above, let me know if the sync is fine for you.

Cornfusing!

I'm not seeing sync issues here either.

Sync looks good to me too. But maybe these old eyes can't see 3 frames out anymore. Nice job on the 2 pass VBR compression. Looks great!

Weird. Now that I'm at home, it all looks fine here. The only computers that seemed to have any issues with it today were three separate computers on the WSU campus. I can't imagine why there would be issues there, but you guys say it looks fine and here at home, it looks fine.

Whew! Well, I had better figure out what the issue is because many people viewing our videos will be on the WSU campus!

Thanks, everyone!

Didn't notice any lip sync issues but enjoyed the video of Egypt - we were there this Spring for 2 weeks - started in Cairo - then to Luxor, then Aswan, AbuSimbel, back to Cairo and a day in Paris on the return - what a trip to remember - I think Aswan and the sail boating was the highlight - but the Hilton Resort in Luxor was tops on amenities which completely missing in the rest of the real Egypt. My wife liked Abu Simbel temple the best - great story behind that! I found the videoing not as compelling as picture taking - we filled up most of a 4gb picture card - 2000 photos if I remember correctly.

Just by luck I found some information that might be relevant to your problem. Certainly you appear not alone with having this kind of problem with FLV.
The problem is reported to relate to changing the frame rate and not changing the audio stream. Some players do not handle this well and will playback the video with audio out of sync. If you're feeding Vimeo 30fps then Vimeo will be changing the frame rate to 24fps.

I'd suggest rendering your vision and sound to a 24fps stream and uploading that to Vimeo and see how you go. To be honest my brain hurts trying to understand what I read elsewhere but what the heck, I'd certainly give it a try even if it doesn't make sense.

Bob, should it be 24fps or 23.976?

I'd suggest rendering your vision and sound to a 24fps stream and uploading that to Vimeo and see how you go.

There are several good tutorials on rendering hi-def footage for the internet using Vegas on YouTube. I followed the instructions in 2 of tutorials and have never had a problem uploading my hi-def content and having the audio synced. I then save my preset for later use for uploading videos.

Probably 23.976, I think Vimeo list it as 24 but maybe they're being lazy.

This may or not be related, but I've noticed that sometimes when you use VBR compression, you can lose sync between the video and audio. When this happens it will sometimes lose sync only sometimes or on some systems. I usually encode with CBR for this reason.
