New bug in 9.0a

gjesion wrote on 7/23/2009, 7:53 AM
I have found that every now and then, when I copy and paste a grouped text and lower thirds all the formatting and info in the text box (standard, not Pro Type) goes away for ALL of the text boxes. They all become the default "Sample Text". Sheesh!

Note: I have been using this workflow for my lower thirds since version 5 with no problems.

Edit: This appears to be caused by the undo function which does not seem to work properly.

Jerry Jesion

I've seen something like this -- all ProType Titler text graphics suddenly empty (no text) or reverted to original text of the preset. Weird! .. I didn't relate it to an undo but maybe it was ?? -- I"ll be watching for this one again. Only saw it once so far but really shocked me! Not something I can reproduce so far.

I am also struggling with this - crippling on the project I am working on with a lot of titles.
gjesion wrote on 7/23/2009, 9:31 AM
Try using the reference option rather than a new copy followed by an undo. Also try pasting a new version, change the text then try to undo. Nothing happens!

BTW have you seen the "Good Job Sony" thread??

I got the same problem, but with the normal text generator.

I was about to burn my project when i noticed that all my text got replaced.

It was a little irksome.

Repeatable here as well
XP Pro 32-bit with 9.0a.
We have yet another bug :-(

edit: submitted report to Tech Support referencing this thread

Related text problem:
Yesterday I opened a 9a project that had rendered properly overnight, but I decided to edit the text at the end that held credits. It was standard text holding quite a bit of text that I configured to scroll down using the ordinary position tool & keyframes.

It TURNED RED on the timeline when I reopened the project, again in 9a. Also, no text at all showed up in the preview window. When I deleted it from the timeline and re-placed it from the media pool, it was again OK, with the scrolling configuration still intact. Weird, but it only happened on that particular text event; several others in the project never had a problem.

I had opened several other windows from the View menu - media generators, etc. The only reason I'm suspicious of those other windows is that the project also crashed after rendering for a few minutes. Error message: "your system running low on memory" - and BSOD after I click "OK" in the error message box.

After reboot and closing all the open windows by unchecking everything in the View menu except Vid Preview, it rendered OK. Just to be safe, I also had turned off all background programs, AV software, etc.; so can't say for sure what fixed the problem. I had not turned off background processes the night before, and generally I have not found that doing so improves rendering reliability much . . . anyway, it rendered just fine in 11 hours overnight, and when I played it this morning all was OK. - Q6600 2.7gHz 4 gig RAM

I have encountered the same 'all text reset to default' just after 'undoing' a split in a video clip using 9.0a. The text in ProType and a standard text overlay changed to their respective 'Sample Text' defaults..

I saw this with simple text the night I got 9a

Great programe sony !

I do feel sorry for others but at least I am not alone with 9a poblems

9a is not the utopia that some was saying it was the day it came out

It seems David, You are just sitting there waiting with anticipation for the bugs
in Vegas to keep pouring out.

David Laine wrote on 7/24/2009, 4:11 PM
hey guys

That is not very fair

Since 9a came out I have seen a number of bugs and problems posted here but I have only commented on one here and one in DVDA as they are the only ones I have seen here.

Someone here says he cannot load 9a in to a windows 7 64 laptop well i have done that and unlike him it works for me

The problem I cannot come to grips with software that costs £400+ and it does not do ALL what is says on the tin

It really is nothing personal to you guys I thought this forum was for airing all views about vegas not just saying how good it was and problems were to be expected and how the writers if vegas should not be critisised for errors ect

No offence to any forum user was ment by my postings

As I do not use vegas now and have removed it from my PC I dont think I will need to agree with any other folk who have problems since you know all the ones I found and as I do not use it now I won't find any more

Still the show is not over till the fat lady sings

Have a great weekend guys (and girls)

People don't mind talking about bugs and other problems... that's what this board is for. But personally speaking, I can live without the "Great programe sony !" kind of stuff.... it's really not needed.

All programs have bugs. You can't understand how a $500 program like vegas can have bugs. I just got Adobe CS4 at about 6 times the price ($3000).... and it's full of bugs too.

You do your part and fill out the problem tickets as you find them... that's one of the ways how these programs get better.

blink, the biggest issue I have with Pro 9 is that things that worked perfectly in Pro 8 are, for whatever reason, now broken.
I very rarely complain about anything as I don't consider myself a power user but when I personally experience this bug as well as the blurred rotation in Pan/Crop and the loss of over 1/2 of my custom render templates, I get a mite perturbed.
Before you ask, I've submitted reports on all 3 incidents.
I know I'm not alone in feeling this as the various forums I'm on have people asking the same question over and over again.
This used to work and now it doesn't. Why not?
It would be nice to have someone from SCS drop in here and admit that there are issues still being worked on.
Can you imagine bringing you car into the dealership for an oil change and they still have it a week later with no explanation whatsoever?
That's what this is starting to feel like.
Even a periodic visit saying "we're currently working on these issues now" would go a long way towards making us feel better.

Text in place
Save and close.

When reopen:
"Warning: An error while loading the project file (name of file)"
Click on "No details"
"This project file is missing one or more project media list elements"

Go to text -text reverted to "Sample Text"

Ouch

Now that's funny. No more than about 24 hours ago the whole board was screaming..."way to go scs!"..... "great job scs!"

Now we find a possible bug and all of a sudden it's..... what is wrong with these scs people? How come they're not talking to us? What are they hiding?

I'll 3rd blinkie...and second him on CS4. I have CS4 Master collection...don't get me started on the bugs. But hey, I've also screwed up during shoots where I have to apologize to a client and schedule a re-shoot. As the saying goes, "t'aint none of us perfect." :-)

A text bug is a BIG bug when you run a business that depends on having all of the titles correct & retyping everything means lots of wasted time!

I guess I won't be upgrading yet! I always purchase the newest version at the special upgrade price. I just do not install it for about 6 months until I see on these forums that the bugs have been worked-out...

I have been using Vegas since 3.0, and I can be patient with Sony as long as they keep the upgrades so affordable. Adobe had WAY more bugs in their early Premiere versions than Sonic Foundry ever did and this is why I chose Vegas over Premiere in the first place.

Chart-out the cost of upgrades vs. the competition, and you will find that Sonic Foundry/Sony have saved us a bundle in the last 8 years...

Workstation C with $600 USD of upgrades in April, 2021

--32GB of G.Skill DDR4 3200 ($100 on Black Friday...)

--Used VEGA 56 GPU ($200 on eBay before mining craze...)
--Noctua Cooler, 750W PSU, OS SSD, LSI RAID Controller, SATAs, etc.

Workstation D with $1,350 USD of upgrades in April, 2019

--$140 Corsair H150i liquid cooling with 360mm radiator (3 fans)
--$200 open box Asus Z390 WS (PLX chip manages 4/5 PCIe slots)

--$350 refurbished, but like-new Radeon Vega 64 LQ (liquid cooled)

"Go to text -text reverted to "Sample Text"" This seems to indicate an error in loading the veg file and passing data to the FX filters and media generators. If you did not resave your veg file after you noticed the error,; you probably have a good chance that your previous work is ok. Try using MS to a make couple copies of the vegs file so if any "fixes" that occur soon, you'll be able to test them without losing your work.

LOL, Blink....just not possible to please everyone and every software will always have
major and minor bug issues no matter what.
SCS listens, and attends to them more than all the other major NLE development
teams out there.
rs170a wrote on 7/25/2009, 7:57 AM
I never said I had any major complaints with SCS.
I do appreciate all the hard work they've done since they took over from Sonic Foundry.
I've been a Vegas user since it was an audio-only app at version 1.0 so I have a long history with them.
In the SF days and the early days of the SCS takeover, we saw company reps here on a regular basis.
Unfortunately this has dropped off to the point that we see bops and ForumAdmin on here very intermittently :-(
IMO, good customer service means that you make yourself available to your customers as often as you possibly can.
Email support is OK but it only goes so far.

To use my automotive analogy again, I purchased a vehicle almost 2 years ago from a local dealer.
Even though the sales rep I dealt with is no longer there, I continue to get letters advising me of who has taken his/her place.
Is this important? In the grand scheme of things, no, but it shows me that this is a dealership who wants to keep my business.
Guess what? it works!!
My wife purchased her car from them last year and gets the same great personal service.
We will keep dealing with them.

Once again, my gripe is that the issues I referred to in this thread are things that worked perfectly in Pro 8 and are now broken in Pro 9.
Is it too much to ask that they be fixed?
I don't think so.

Yeah... and does Ford have a forum where you can chat with other Ford owners and have a ford rep, mechanic, engineer and designer on hand 24/7? Does General electric have a lightbulb forum with a lightbulb rep on hand to answer all of your questions at anytime with regard to the different filament types?

You can contact scs ANYTIME with an issue. They'll get back to you usually within the same business day.... 2 at the most.

But after saying all of that... I have to ask you.... where does it say that this forum is anything other than a USER forum?

I just don't get this silly expectation that people have with regards to these kinds of forums. They're NOT (and never really have been) designed to be a pathway directly to scs in the manor that you speak of. They're designed primarily so that the users can meet, talk and discuss the program in question.

As for your letters... if you think there is anything personal behind them.... you would be sadly mistaken. Some computer blindly spits out the letter according to a rather blind computer calendar and some blind clerk signs it and pops in the "to be mailed" box... while on her way to the bathroom. Now if you feel that this is some kind of loyalty which you need to return by purchasing another vehicle from them.... then I would have to say you're a pretty easy person to please.

I've seen this behavior with text reverting to its original preset values several times now. Can't pin down what conditions trigger it. Only common thing is that all the projects were started in 9.0.

Has anyone seen this text reverting thing in a project that was orig created in 9.0a ?
