I gather from a Facebook link that Spot has a serious pelvic injury and is recovering in hospital. I assume it was from a skydiving accident but I'm not sure about this.

Either way, best wishes for as speedy a recovery as you can manage, Spot - sounds like you had a close call. Hang in there and let us know how you're going.

Grammy-winning producer and prominent Stockton resident Douglas Spotted Eagle was critically injured Monday afternoon after a botched skydiving landing at the Tooele Valley Airport.

Spotted Eagle, 46, had been practicing with five or six other divers from Skydive Utah when he failed to pull out of a turn soon enough and slammed into the ground going 15 to 20 mph, according to Deputy Keith Borders of the Tooele County Sheriff’s Office.

“When they come down they spin and then they do a flare to bring the parachute level with the ground,” Borders said. “He didn’t come in too smooth and came right into the ground.”

Spotted Eagle suffered pelvic and back injuries, and was air-lifted to Intermountain Medical Center in Salt Lake City.

“This was entirely pilot [skydiver] error,” Spotted Eagle said while awaiting surgery, adding that the jump was made from 13,500 feet. “The parachute deployed perfectly fine. It was a normal dive until the last two or three seconds. I lost grip on my toggle.”

Aside from his successes in the music world, Spotted Eagle is an expert in the field of video production, a subject he has written on extensively.

Skydive Utah owner Jack Guthrie said Spotted Eagle was a very experienced skydiver.

“He had 1,400 jumps under his belt,” Guthrie said, adding that such accidents are rare. “When a diver is getting ready to land, they make a turn. In that turn, we lose altitude, and in this case he just turned too close to the ground. It’s been two years since we’ve had an ambulance out here for anything other than precaution. This is very rare.”

I'm taking a risk in hoping that Spot won't mind me pasting some of his Facebook postings - I'm sure he'll be cool - after all, we are his "other" family.

DSE: I got a new pelvis from Titanium In, but my L1,2,3 are still in pieces, my sacrum is no longer sacred, and my ACL took a hike. MCL is still with me, but says it's broken and doesn't want to work for me anymore. The left knee has divorced itself from the short marriage to traction rods so there is merely a big hole left where the love once was. Wrists are no longer blue, but listening to Michael Manring helps.

DSE: Listening to Adele and reading everyone's posts and mail makes me bawl. I'm never lonely but damn...I'm alone. Pain creates a unique perspective. Getting excited about having a "#2" is depressing. Hanging on by my teeth here, it's my first night without a full-time babysitter in the room. No more ICU means I can sleep 3 hours per night now without Dr's worrying I'm gonna die. Mortality rate of pelvics is around 60%.

DSE: No, not rambling on drugs; today I only had two shots of pain killers so I can start prepping for PT. Anyone who says death is never preferable to pain is full of shit. And Phil....you got *exactly* (verbatim) what you asked for last fall; I'm no longer flying, I'm no longer teaching, and yet still doing marketing and promo for the DZ. Your wish came true, Congrats. I''m humbled.

Not good. Wishing Spot a good recovery, but it will be slow. Being a very fit fellow will improve the final outcome.

Very sorry to hear about your accident. Hoping for a rapid recovery by my hero. Your Vegas seminars at the LA DV Expo a few years back are etched in my memory. You're a first class guy and a first class talent. Hang tough and you'll be back.
