I''m using a Dell inpiron 3700 laptop and am wondering the
best way to input DAT and Analog signals into Sound Forge
4.5. The computor has an unbalanced 8th inch stereo input.
What is the cleanest way in for both digital and anolog
(1/4inch)? Hardware suggestions?

Chances are the sound card built into your Dell is not
suitable for any 'pro' results. And, unless it has spdif
or AES/EBU inputs you won't be putting any digital signals
through it.

You might check into getting a USB device for audio input
if your laptop has a USB port. There are many manufacturers
of USB audio devices. Maybe someone reading has some
experience one?

Or, Digigram (www.digigram.com) makes a PCMCIA slot audio
card. I don't know much about the Digigram, just have seen
the ads, it has balanced analog throughput providing 24bit
audio, and spdif throughput for your digital throughput.

In the meantime you could cobble some 1/4" to 1/8" adaptors
and use your existing sound card for analog sources, but
the sonic results might not be all that great.

Good luck.
