I'm preparing a bunch of spoken word files so they can be downloaded from the Net. When saving the files as mp3s, Sound Forge 7 gives me a little check-box that says "Save metadate with file?" Sould I check that yes? And what exactly is the metadata? Thanks for your answers.

Metadata is information not normally seen (or heard) on a file or document. In our MP3 case, this can be: title, artist, author, comments, engineer, duration, track number, date, copyright, ect, ect, ect, ect. The title, artist and track number info usually display on an MP3 player or in a Windows folder toolbar if those parameters are selected. It is up to you whether you want to fill in this info, it will not affect the audio either way.
I normally fill in the data for user convenience, You can edit this via "File> Properties> Summary" in SF... or after the fact in many MP3 players such as Winamp without re saving.

I you want to write the data after creating the file, look at this program. I have not used it.

Thank you for the advice. One further question: When saving the metadata, should I place an underscore between words to avoid that % sign showing up in the spaces, or is that not necessary in the metadata?

Not necessary with metadata. Metadata is straight, uninterpreted text. Spaces are more of a problem with URLs and sometimes with filenames. My general rule is to *never* put spaces in filenames or URLs. It just makes life easier that way.
