I am about to buy a new PC to use mostly for music composition. I have been using Acid Pro 4.0 for many years and have a sizable collection of project files. I am wondering what impact a 64 bit machine will have on a smooth migration. I realize that I will have to upgrade to Acid Pro 7.0, but will my project collection from 4.0 open in version 7.0? I am torn between wanting the latest and fastest vs. less headaches. Please advise.

Haven't had any major problems to speak of ever since upgrading hardware and software to Vista 64-bit (minus the occasional incompatibility issue with older applications I use, which I stress aren't musically related). Then again, mine's been more of a gentle, sloping upgrade curve rather than a severe one.

My advice would be to scout out to see if any of the hardware and software you choose is able to run under 64-bit. (ACID Pro 7, naturally, is one of them.) Be aware any older, favorite applications you like may have to be upgraded (if possible).

There shouldn't be any problem opening projects created in older versions of ACID Pro under ACID Pro 7. Just be prepared; Pro 7 and Pro 4 are like night and day in terms of feature lists. You might also consider saving the project under a new name once you open it in Pro 7 (though Pro 7 should ask and confirm that it's an older project if you try to save).

Iacobus

Absolutely NOT!!!!!

Do not use acid 7 in Vista 64...repeat...do ...NOT...use acid in Vista64.

I have heard of no issues with XP or Vista 32.

Don't say I didn't warn you.

Uh, SHTUNOT -

Could you kindly back up your warning with a few facts?

?

I haven't had any major problems to speak of with ACID Pro 7 in Vista 64-bit. (There was that minor glitch with playing MIDI real-time while a project was playing with the multithreaded soft synth option checked but I can't seem to repro it since the latest update.)

Can you give us an example, Ed?

fr3tl3ss,

Take my word for it.

If you want to get work done go for the proven scenario of 32bit app+32bit plugins+perfectly matured audio drivers=happy.

I was where you are at and I wish I had someone tell me these words.

Facts...Sorry I would get too heated and I think the server might crash.

If you want to go 64bit then you get a 64 bit app with 64 bit plugins+hopefully well written low latency drivers.

You've been warned.

Ed.

I would take SHTUNOT's advice seriously, hes helped me out a few times!

Ive no experience with a 64-bit DAW but a few people who I know that have upgraded to 64 bit, especially vista have generally regretted it, do you really need 32 gigs of ram? 4 is more than enough unless your trying to record ten thousand instruments at once?

Ultimatly its your decision but everyone I know reccommends XP over Vista for audio anyways.

Personally, if you go for Vista (whether it's 32- or 64-bit), my advice would be to pare it down as much as possible. (This includes turning off "features" such as Superfetch.)
