Subject:Midi Sound Soft v Hard

Just curious about something. I was over at Sweetwater Sound in Ft Wayne yesterday talking about Midi with their sales guy.

My impression was that you directed midi signals to external sound modules, and you could take a midi track off the net somewhere and send, (for example), horns out to an external box.

The salesman tells me that the new thing is software that loads on the PC and operates in place of the sound module, so you don't have to have multiple modules in your setup.

The thing that got my attention was that he claimed that if I took a midi track that I downloaded from the net, and used this software, that it would be closer to sounding like real horns than the sound modules.

Any truth to this?

Absolutely - I have many software samples which I use in Acid, and haven't used an external module for years.

The first stop is the DLS Soft Synth which ships with Acid, and Kompakt, a Third Party Sampler that came with Acid.

I have also bought a set of instruments called Komplete 4, all great quality sounds with almost unlimited properties you can tweak.

Hardware sound modules have some good sounds, and some dodgy ones too - on average I find the software samples are higher quality and more authentic sounding.

Adding to what Peter said, some soft synths are actually not synthesized; they're the real deal (e.g., ARIA for ACID Pro, which comes with ACID Pro 7). They don't just sound like real horns, they are real horns. :D
