PICTURE(S) washed out! How do I fix?

greyA wrote on 4/6/2009, 9:50 AM
I find my picture - whether video or still pics are all washed out (whited out) whenever I render my final edit to save to my hard drive to then put my movie on a cd or dvd.

How do I fix this?

Also the picture quality in general is just much worse. It seems I have the best settings on when I render and still this happens.

What can I do?

Thanks

Are you color correcting? If yes, are you using an external monitor to do so? You can't reliably use the preview screen for this purpose - you really need to do an external preview.

Hello,

No I am not color correcting or using an external monitor.

How do I use an external monitor?

Shouldn't the video be just the same as I see it in the preview though. It's not even close... It gets completely washed out.

Thank you very much!

Also, what kind of setting would I use on the color correcting?

Thanks (again)!

My dell screen has a 'video' preset. I use it when I color correct video, because a pc screen has different contrast settings compared to a tv.

I think you pc screen 's settings are far off from your tv settings, so when you optimize your movie for the pc, you'll be far off for tv.

Thanks for the suggestion...

I watch it on my PC so it's the same screen.

It must have something to do with the rendering and loss of quality or something along those lines???

Does other video (wmv, mpg, mp4) that you haven't personally rendered do the same thing when you play it? Have you tried rendering to a different file format or even tried just a different codec for video?

Hi... Thanks for the help...

I have tried rendering about 6 times now and every time, every which way the pics and video get washed out, as I lose video quality on the whole project. Even the writing will become somewhat pixelated (somewhat jagged).

I've tried mpeg1, mpeg 2, avi, WMP9, and that's it I think. I've tried the best quality and tried mediocre quality and it doesn't make a difference. The best I've gotten the video quality was with avi uncompressed (mediocre quality) and it came out to 1.3 gigs (it's a 5 min very basic video). It still was washed out, but not as pixelated.

I just want to be able to watch this video with Windows Media Player with the same quality as in the preview when editing.

Please help! Thank you!

***Also, I don't know what or how to change the codec... what is that?

Have you tried wmv (the hd template 720p). That should give a very decent quality with acceptable size.

So, if I get this right:
1) In the Vegas preview, you have a nice quality video
2) But when you render, you get a (white) washed out , pixelated video.

That in itself is very bizar.

Would it be possible to upload 10 seconds of it to vimeo.com or youtube, and post the url here, so we can take a look?

My guess is that the video overlay settings in your graphics card drivers are set funky. What video card do you have?

Hello Ivan,

Thanks for the help. I'm not sure if I've tried that template yet, but I will try it. I should mention I guess that I have Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 6. NOt the absolute latest version.

Yes, you are accurate in your thinking.

It is very strange... I will see about uploading part of the video.

Thanks for the help!

Hello, thanks for your help!

Yes, that is possible. I have a very low grade PC. The video is onboard - maybe 16 meg or so. However, seeing as it is clear in the preview tool, but then not in WMP still doesn't make sense other than a problem with rendering (I would think).

Thanks for any help!

Much appreciated!

Version 6 doesn't do HD, so opt for the best quality wmv format available instead.

Thanks Ivan,

Are you sure version 6.0 doesn't do HD? I've seen all sorts of settings that say HD when rendering the project.

Since my computer is lacking a bit, do you think it may help to have the computer work from an external source with all the project work created? I don't have an external HD but I have an 8 gig USB stick that might work? That way the software is on my main C drive and all the work being done is on the USB. I'm not sure.

What do you think?

Thanks!

If you have Vegas Platinum, it may do HD. I don't remember exactly.

Keep your programme, Vegas' temporary files, your images and original (captured) footage on the c drive, and render towards the usb stick. You may want to clock the render times and compare. If the difference is not significant, you can better use the usb stick for other things...

Hi greyA -

You may mail me 1 or 2 of the stills and I will look at it.

(Mail to: see my specs.)

Hello,

Thanks for the help guys! Much appreciated!

Ristmer, thanks for the offer... How do I do that? I'm guessing I need to get a snapshot of the still within the video so that it's a small file to send to you?

Please advise.

Also I didn't see the email address in the specs, is it there someplace?

Thanks again!
