HP CD Writer M820e/Other laptop CD burners

I am looking for a CD burner for a laptop and am interested
in the HP CD Writer M820e that is supposedly supported by CD
Arch. The default connection type for this drive is through
a PCMCIA card; however this device can connect via SCSI-2 if
I get the necessary SCSI connection card and cable.

Technical support has given me the run around about CD Arch
working through the PCMCIA card connection. I have heard
from different tech support personnel that it will and will
not work through the PCMCIA connection. This device is
listed as a supported drive on the website, but gives no
information about the connection that makes is work.

I don't want to buy this drive and not have it work. Anyone
have any information on this particular drive or has had
success using CD Arch on a laptop with a particular CD
burner?

Thanks,
Martin

Hi Martin,
I just bought a HP 8052i CD recorder, but I'm using IDE. The 8052
was recognized immediately thanks to the installation CD that came
with the drive. (It even has an installation video on the CD!) CD
Architect recognized this drive also. I have a Yamaha CDRW 4001, CD
Architect supports this drive as well but CD Architect had problems
recognizing it. I spent hours on the phone with Sonic Foundry tech
support trying to get the 4001 recognized, resulting in many more
hours of lost business in the studio.
Suprisingly, Adaptec's Easy CD Creator had no problem recognizing
the 4001. So, it appears to be a CD Architect software problem. I
would recomend buying a HP drive if it is compatible with your
system, but if CD Architect doesn't recognize it immediately or you
can't get SF tech support to find the answer quickly, take the drive
back and get a different model. Keep trying until you get a drive
that is seen by CD Architect quickly.
As far as Sonic Foundry's tech support: try Nate, I had good luck
with him. Most of the tech people try to help, but been thru the run
around routine too. If you're not getting what you want from a tech
support person, ask to talk to someone else....hey it's your dime
remember?
Good luck, Mark

Hi there.

We have a list of drives that are supported by the software,
available at:
http://www.sonicfoundry.com/CDArchitect/drvsupp.asp?Nav=0

If the drive does not show up on the list, it most likely will not be
recognized in CD Architect.

Not all CD writers are capable of doing the "things" that CD
Architect can do, for example, crossfading between tracks recording
in Disc at Once mode, this is why we have a supported devices list.

Thanks.
