Subject:DLS Softsynth Help?

Already being a Sony Vegas Pro and Soundforge user I couldn't resist the recent Sony sale and purchased Acid 7 Pro. When playing back most of the songs that come with ACID many of the sounds that are from the DLS Softsynth don't seem have any sound coming from them.

Even in a new file when I bring in the DSL Softsynth in the drop down menu there is only the GM sound bank.

I have tried about ten different songs and it seems the drums sounds from the DLS aren't working in any of them. I sure I doing something wrong. Any thoughts.

Thanks....

Try clicking on the soft synth piano to the left of the other one - then select midi channel - 10 ?????

Please fill out your system specs in your user profile and make sure to mark them visible.

Could you describe exactly what you are doing? Step by step if possible.

The basic procedure for using the DLS with alternate sound sets is to:

1. Load the sound set into an instance of the DLS.
2. Create a MIDI track and route the MIDI track to the DLS synth instance.
3. Make sure to select the voice from the MIDI track or the DLS.
4. Add, draw/edit, record MIDI data to the track.

I cannot find the DSL sound set anywhere. I have looked in every folder related to Sony to find it and no luck. Please help.

Also in all of the demo songs the drums sounds don't trigger unless I go and reset each drum track to midi channel 10. I don't understand why I have to do this manually. Why isn't already set in the song file.

This may be caused by a bug in the Vista DLS synth that we use.

Microsoft is aware of the bug. I do not know the status of the update or whether MS has released the update.

If you could provide me with a specific demo project that is causing you problems, this would be helpful in determining whether this is indeed the MS bug or something else.

All of the demo projects except the start up demo. And I cannot find any of the DLS voice files.
I should have known it would be a vista issue. I just went with vista 64 in my new Intel i7 Machine and it hasn't been the easiest road. Thanks.

All of the demo projects except the start up demo.

Could you please provide the file name of at least one demo project that causes the problem?

Where are you looking for the DLS voice files? Be specific.

Why do you believe that a DLS voice file is not being loaded?

Please, the more details on exactly what you are doing will help us to investigate and solve the problem. If you could provide a step by step procedure that would be most helpful.

Thanks
Peter

Where are you looking for the DLS voice files? Be specific.

Where am I supposed to be looking for them?

When I open the folder next to the voice set in the DLS properties it defaults to the start up project, nothing there. So then I go and look in every single folder under sony acid 7 program directory and the documents folder sony content directories.

Why do you believe that a DLS voice file is not being loaded?

I didn't say I didn't think they were loaded. I just can't find them anywhere.

Please, the more details on exactly what you are doing will help us to investigate and solve the problem. If you could provide a step by step procedure that would be most helpful.

1. Open new project
2. Create MIDI track
Click softsynth properties tab in docking window. It shows only GS sound set. Click on folder next to drop down window "Open DLS voice set" goes to start up project, nothing there with dls extension. DOn;t know were to go from there to find dls sound set.

Is there supposed to be any other sound set other than the GS sound set?

On my old P4 running XP I rarely ever had a crash with Vegas Pro, Soundforge, Sonar. In the few weeks I have Vista 64 I have more crashes than all the time I had my P4.

I sure hope MS new Windows 7 is better and comes out soon or this is going to be a very looong frustrating year for me.

Thanks for all your help.

Straight Up, Lil Groove, GTO, Gothy

Loading these project works correctly for me.

4 DLS synths are created and the appropriate DLS sample set is loaded.

Where am I supposed to be looking for them?

That depends on how you installed them and to where.

On my system there is the following folder layout:

M:\ACID Media\Custom Sound Sets and Songs

with in this directory is a folder:

DLS Instruments

This is where the DLS sound sets are located.

M:\ACID Media\Custom Sound Sets and Songs\Rock\Straight Up

will reference to this DLS Instruments directory in order to load the correct sample set bank.

How did you install this media to your system?

Is there supposed to be any other sound set other than the GS sound set?

If you install the media onto your disk, yes. If not, no.

The DLS sample sets are located in a sub folder

DLS Instruments

If you cannot locate this, you may want to do a search for files that have an extension of dls.

Thank you for your help. I have found the DLS voices. Vegas install put them in a little different location than you showed but you helped me get there.

In the demos the problem is that in the drum tracks I have to change each track to midi 10 and when I do it all works fine. Not sure why the song projects aren't already set to midi 10. So since I have to change each drum track to midi 10 is there a way to do this so I don't have to do each track one by one.
