Film Footage Organizer/Catalog Software

With the enormous size of hard disk space available I have decided to capture and store all of my home video files to disk. After each capture I would like to catalog each file with highlights and comments for fast searching.

I would like to know what programs are best suited for organizing, cataloging, and/or management of stock footage avi files.

Thanks for any suggestions.

I don't know of any external application, but you have the media manager build in Vegas. I beleive, it can do something like you wish - you could try it.

MS Excel works great.

Media manager is great for this... but I think you have to start up vegas to get into MM don't you?

I know PhotoShop elements contains a media manager similar to Sony's MM. You can tag and sort just like MM. It will even display M2T thumbnails. You can also open it as an independent entity outside of photoshop.

You can preview not only pictures but M2T, AVI MPG... etc. It won't however recognize MTS M2TS.

Google Picasa will do some multimedia formats. I haven't used it for captured clips or even many multimedia files but it works good for pics - plus it's free.

Another choice is Portfolio from Extensis. The latest version is 8.5 but the product has been around for years. It also will help organise your still images and documents files.

If you have Photoshop CS4, it comes with Abobe Bridge and that
will do what you need.
