What's up with AP7.0a? I never know when it's going to happen.... then suddenly when I'm performing a simple task, like muting a track, or auditioning audio in the browser, or moving events, or chopping something (not to mention the fact that rewind or fast forward doesn't work on my MCU).... CRASH! It's a crap shoot if I'll make it through a session without having to restart the program like five times before I give up & decide to go do something else. When are we going to get version b? There must be alot of issues because it seems like its taking a long time, or maybe I'm impatient & frustrated! AAAARRRGGGGHHHHH!!!

There's a thread from a few days ago called "I guess the mixing console is crashing AP7".

I had some crashing problems and the advice given to me, having to do with optimizing the audio device buffer settings, worked like a charm. Maybe that'd be a place to start?

Look through the "Older Topics" list. Right now that thread is topic #24.

Hi Daystar sound

I'm wondering if you were able to solve some of your crashing problems in AP7 as I'm also experiencing some crashing in different situations which are sometimes hard to reproduce. If you have any success please let me know as it may help me out or others experiencing problems with their systems.

Thanks

cheye

What would be "optimal" buffer settings? I'm running XP pro SP2 w/a core 2 quad CPU @2.66GHz & 4 gigs of RAM. I use an RME HDSP9652 audio card w/ an 8 I/O A/D D/A converter. Right now the track buffer size is set to .25 sec.

Not sure about that, but did you go into the next window and check the audio device latency settings?

In the "audio preferences" > "advanced" ?

With my Tascam us1641as the audio device I was able to access another window that let me increase it's latency to its highest setting...in my case 11ms - 512samples or something like that. The higher setting improved AP7's performance in my case. It was set at the default setting which was much lower. Not at home at the minute to look at the exact path in the audio preferences windows.

My latency is set to 5ms (256 samples). I track all the time in Cubase 4 (up to 8 chanels at a time if I'm recording a band with plugins) at the same setting & have no problem. I'd think Cubase is more CPU intensive than AP7. I have to run out of the studio now. I'll be back to view posts tomorrow.

Good luck with this problem. I just started using cubase and I can't wait to fully understand it. I have used acid for a few years now and I have had nothing but headaches from it. I recently bought ap7 and like yourself I can be doing the most basic edit and it crashes. I get so sick of reloading it that I simply move on to something else.
I have heard every excuse in the book.. but you know the old saying if it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck... well I hope that you can see where I am going with this...
I have finally decided to move on and I hope someday acid will be a more reliable recording program.

Yeah, it does get frustrating.

The advice given me helped quite a bit. I increased the virtual memory too. So this weekend I really started to push the program by adding bunches of VSTs (mostly Waves, Tone2 Warmverb, Blue Tubes Analog Track Box and Izotope Ozone, yes pretty CPU intense ones for the most part) and envelopes (volume and pan) to a 25+ track project I have going and I could see the CPU usage inching higher and higher with every extra function, until I crashed it again and again. Sometimes AP7 would crash upon restart without fully reloading this project, even if I was restarting from a saved spot. I knew I was over powering my computer though. Its a 24bit project too so I'm guessing that makes things more power hungry(?) I can have it run this project with a couple VSTs with no crashing or stuttering with the new latency settings and I'm starting to pre-render the individual tracks with FX in Sound Forge.

I guess I'm learning my computer's limits with the program. Though some of you do seem to have more crashes with more basic functions. For someone like me who's kind of new to doing audio projects this intense, sorting some of this stuff out is a bit frustrating and the "program has encountered an error and must shut down" warnings. ..Uhhg!

I will say recording via the Tascam US 1641 and AP7 has been pretty solid. Recorded 14 tracks at once at times and overdubbing in various projects has been pretty smooth. Most of the frustration seems to be mixing and editing using some, probably processor intense VSTs and such.

I'll be in touch when I get these problems resolved to let everyone know possible fixes. Ciao.

Looks like a mix. Click on our screen names, most of use have our system info in our profile as requested by the mods. :)
