8.1 System memory low error

eVoke wrote on 12/30/2008, 3:45 PM
While I'm on vacation this week I took some time to install Vegas on my 64bit system. I've installed both 8.0c and 8.1 versions of Vegas and everything seemed to be going UNTIL I attempted to compare render times on my old 32bit system vs my new 64bit systerm. I took a 1 minute / 10 second HDV clip and placed it on both machines and attempted to render it into a MainConcept AVC [mp4] file. Launched the render on my 32bit system without a hitch as usual but when I went to render it on my 64bit system under 8.1 I kept getting the system memory low error. I went into the system settings and entered custom amounts based on the 8GB of available RAM but I still keep getting system memory low errors. The plot twist to this is that I can render into any other format execept MainConcept AVC and Quicktime mov formats with no problems.

Any other 64bit/8.1 users ever experience this issue?

Thought this error may have been based on the fact I forgot to install Quicktime on the the new 64bit machine but I'm still getting the system low error message even after having installed that as well.

I'm having the same problem with almost the exact same system specs.

I'm trying to render a 3:44 clip with Main Concept's AVC/AAC with an output res of 1280 X 720 and I get the same Memory Low error. I have 8 gigs of RAM and I have Vegas set with a dynamic RAM level of six gigs. I've tried VBR and CBR and I get the same result: error.

Can anybody out there help us with this? Pretty please!?

The RAM setting is for doing previews in RAM to speed up previewing. If you set that number too high, there is no memory left for Vegas to use for anything else, like for example, rendering an output video file. Unless you are doing long RAM previews, leave that setting at the default. For debugging purposes, with regard to the "low memory" error, set the value to zero and see what happens.

Setting the preview memory in 8.1 does impact the rendering speed in XP64 - I found significant gains by increasing from the default setting to about 6GB - nothing more to gain for me after 6GB based on my tests up to 7gigs (I have 8 GB installed). Try setting the preview Ram to 5gigs and your problem may go away. Vista uses more RAM than XP so you probably need a lower amount to stay safe than my 6gb.

I would start with MPEG2 files first - they are easier for Vegas to handle than AVC in my experience - had to do some tweeking of the default templates to get AVC to work.

Thanks to everyone for jumping in to help. Unfortunately, neither changing the registry nor setting the RAM at 5 gigs solved the problem; I'm still unable to render an AVC/AAC file.

*sigh* Are there any other ideas we can try?

rendering a similar size 1280x720 project, I received the same error, using the MainConcept codec.

However, both the Sony and wmv codecs worked. As an interesting note, while messing around with the problem, I noticed that the "Sony" codec is actually "MainConcept" while it worked under the Sony brand and not under the "MainConcept" is a mystery.

Also, the wmv codec produced better results at a smaller file size. Go figure!

Finally I have sent all the details to Sony Tech support.

The guys with "memory low" error - do you have a page file at all?

I know a couple of persons who are so enthusiastic about Vista x64 having access to all RAM they have, that they set their systems to no swap file - sooner or later such error must occur!

But you didn't try setting your preview RAM down to the default? That should be 16MB if 8.1 is the same as 8.0.

Having a 6GB, or 5 GB preview RAM setting will fill up your RAM with cached uncompressed frames. If the project is fairly short then a render off of all that should go really fast. The problem is that if the project is a little longer then once Vegas runs out of cached frames then it only would have a gig or so left to work with. Essentially, with a preview RAM setting of 2 GB then Vegas and Windows only have 2 GB left to work with.

Still, you ought to be able to render on a 2 GB system, but I don't know why you'd want to.

Hey guys!
The "system memory low error" as I was told by Sony Tech Support is a known fault/problem when rendering with the MainConcept MP4 format under Pro 8.1. The work around as explained to me is to install 8.0 32bit if you hadn't already and render to MainConcept AVC/MP4 using 8.0 instead until Sony can address the issue in 8.1

Just finished with several emails w/ Sony support on me memory error problem. I could render in Sony mp4 and wmv but not MainConcept mp4.

Support had me delete several specific Sony products, change the registry, eleminate some "services", re-install Vegas Pro 8.0 from "download" and then download 8.1, Problem solved.

DO NOT attempt from the above summary, rather contact Sony Support.
