Subject:Can ACID be re-sold?

Hi,

Sorry to take up valuable forum space with what may be a very simple question, but I have an older version of ACID than the one I am using now and just wondered if I can de-register it from my user account and sell the software on to someone else (such as listing it for sale on eBay).

I know that some companies require you to pay a fee to buy out of the licence (though this is mostly for plugins).

Many thanks.

You'll have to check with SONY's customer support to get the real current story, but generally you can sell your license. Tell customer support that you've done so and the name of the person you've sold it to. They'll deactivate your serial number. When the new person contacts customer support they'll be issued a new serial number of their own. As far as i know there's no fee for this.

Just to add to what Kelly said: if you have upgraded the old version, the person you sell it to CANNOT upgrade again! It is very important that you state this in your eBay listing because lots of times people buy older versions of software on eBay with the intent to upgrade. That's how I got my first version of ACID Pro many moons ago. I bought it on eBay from someone who had not upgraded and Sony gave me a new license key and allowed me to upgrade when the next version came out.

So let me get this straight. If I have upgraded from Acid Pro 6 to 7, I can sell or give away my version 6? hmmm, won't I need it if I every need to reinstall? Just checking.

Correct. The *ONLY* thing you need the previous version for is to get the upgrade discount. The only difference between buying a version upgrade and buying it outright is the price. After that, you have no need or requirement for the old version again, unless you want to hold on to it for sentimental versions. The new version stands completely on it's own.

Wow - that's very interesting/kind of Sony to look at it that way. For other majors like NI etc...when you "upgrade" from a previous version - in order to get the nice price benefits afforded by being a current license holder - the new upgrade license gets bonded to your old license and that forms your new license. Same with Adobe and others.

In other words - one cannot sell the "old" version and keep the new one. You either need to shelf the old and use the new or sell it all.

Cheers!

Are you sure that is right Chien?

The way I look at is this - I have every version of Acid since 3.0 - that is the first one I bought, and I upgraded every time since then.

However, I only own one licence - even though the number has changed a few times over the years. I can't go and sell version 3, 4, 5 and 6 and keep 7, because I don't have 5 licences.

My original version and the next 2 upgrades were all downloads - no CDs. So what would I be selling? The downloads are free anyway. The only thing I could sell would be the licence. But why would having 1 licence (for version 3) entitle me two 3 licences (version 3, 4 and 5) without having paid for 3 (I paid one full price plus 2 upgrade discounts)?

Maybe Sony does do it the way you describe, but that seems extraordinarily generous.

I am sure. You have 5 licenses. Go look in your My Software listing and you'll see them all there and active.. You can sell any or all of them. And yes, that is extraordinarily generous!

But do keep in mind what JohnnyRoy pointed out, which is that once a license has been used for an upgrade it can no longer be upgraded again, even if it is transferred to another person.

This is really great. I don't want to sell the other versions, but I have a friend I play guitar with that could use the older verison without upgrading, so I could give him that one. I have never even thought of doing that because I thought I would be violating my agreement with Sony. Thanks for the info. If Sony does not agree with this, please add a statement here, or the gates will be open. Thanks

One thing to point out here is that resellers offer what is called a "boxed upgrade". This does require the previous version to be installed and registered on the machine in order to activate the upgrade.

When you purchase an upgrade directly from sonycreativesoftware.com, you can upgrade from any previous version, and the upgrade will not require the previous version to be installed on the machine.

So, don't sell your old version if you plan on purchasing an upgrade from a reseller. You can only do this if you purchase your upgrades directly from Sony Creative Software.

Hope this helps.
