If you're using firewire/iLink then you don't need the camcorder software. In fact, installing it can cause all sorts of annoying headaches. Does your computer have a firewire port in it? If so then disconnect the Belkin thingie and toss it in the trash, since it basically is trash.

If both the camcorder and the computer have firewire then the appropriate procedure is to join the two directly together with a firewire cable, then use the VidCap program that came with Vegas to capture.

Not sure about your exact setup, but the error message you mention references a Sony VCR DVR type of device. To ensure best compatibility with Vegas and a DCR-HC28, make sure the camera is connected directly to firewire input on computer. Choose Capture Video to open the Video Capture utility for DV. In that window, find the menu on top for Video and select Microsoft DV VCR or somesuch. Other unsupported device drivers like your VCR thing may also show up or even be selected as default. These will, more often than not, not work. Other helpful information:
