Subject:Acid7 (32bit) on Vista 64bit?

Hey folks:

Just received my new quad-core desktop machine. It comes stock with Vista 64bit since all new CPUs are 64bit these days. Should I be wiping and installing Vista 32bit? Probably safer...

The benefit of keeping 64bit on there:

1. Fully address all 4GB of RAM
2. Don't have to mess with reinstalling the OS and downloading 32bit drivers

The risks:

??? Less stable? Acid isn't 64bit aware. 32bit VSTs might crash? Not sure really.

Hey darrena,

My new DAW setup is...

Vista 64 sp1 [all updates]
Two Intel Xeon Quad CPU E5420@2.5GHz 12mb L2 cache
Supermicro x7dae mobo [bios 3/20/08]
8 gigs of ram
Four 500GB western digital HD [32mb buffer] [or maybe seagate???]
Nvidia GeForce 8600GT
Echo Audiofire4 driver 4.8
800watt power supply

I run sessions using no loops at all. Recorded tracks are usually "beatmapped". I've recorded in "one-shots" with no problem either.

The vst plugins I use always are: [all are the most current version]

NI: Guitar Rig 3 [hi quality mode...like 4-5 instances]
PSP:Vintage warmer 2 and PSP Mix pack 2 and Stereo pack 1.9.
Wavearts Trackplug+Masterverb 5.
Izotope:Ozone 3 [on my master buss always],Spectron,Trash.

Vst Instruments:

Bfd 2.1.0 build 33
Jamstix 2.5 [synced to bfd2 always]

Rewire:

Reason 4.

My sessions run better than they did with acid 6. AP7 has a few bugs to iron out but absolutely no show stoppers here. Work is getting done with minor bumps...no bruises [knock on wood].

I would stick with Vista 64 sp1...SP2 is in beta and should be hopefully be ready by jan-feb '09.

Since your DAW was built with Vista 64 in mind you should be good to go. Your biggest problem is to find a soundcard with SOLID 64bit drivers. I gave up on my presonus firebox. To many clickes/crackles with it. Got me a Echo Audiofire 4 [driver 4.8] and it's much better. Not perfect though...not sure where to point the finger to.

I think there is still a issue with acid or maybe it's a vista 64/echo driver issue.

I spoke to echo tech support and they told me they are rewriting their driver with some info I sent them on my experiences. I think they will have it out after SP1 is released.

I'll email echo and see what they say.

Again I think that you should be good to go as long as your soundcard drivers are good.

Ed.

Anyone using an M-Audio Profire 2626 with Vista 64bit? I know they have a driver.

That's my interface.

I'm actually partially through setting up my box as a 32bit machine. (While the Win install itself is trivial, it's taken quite some time to copy all of the samples, etc.) I wish I waited until I saw this ;-)

I'm going to finish the setup and see what results I get. I can always go back to 64.

So if one buys the Vista 64bit upgrade, it gives you the option of reverting back to 32 bit?

darrena, it might be a good idea to check M-Audio's forums on the quality of the driver.
M-Audio has been on my shit list when it comes to 64 bit support. I have a FW 410 and AP192 on my Quad Core system and 64 bit isn't going to work for me right now.

I don't know about the upgrade from 64 to 32. I'd suspect they'd support it. I have a Vista Ultimate full install retail box and it comes with both 32 and 64 on different DVDs.

For now, it looks like I'll be sticking with 32bit just to be on the safe side. Not a single crash so far on the new system... nice and stable. I'll save 64 for the next upgrade... maybe Acid 7.0b, c, d, etc. will be 64-bit aware.

I have AP7 working perfectly well (at least as well as the 32-bit version) on a quad-core 8GB Vista x64 system.

It is not 64-bit aware - but runs fine as a 32-bit app under Vista x64.

You DO need to be sure you have quality 64-bit drivers for your hardware. This is true no matter WHAT you will be doing on your PC, however - so it has nothing to do with whether Acid works or not.

I experienced a chink in the installer that was easy to remedy - and I seem to be the only person who experienced it. Just don't waste time going to Sony support for help with anything...they are lazy and useless, to say the least.

What VSTs do you use? Have you had any VSTs or VSTis fail to run on 64?
