Installed AP7 and updated to 7.0a.

I get the following error when I start the application:

"The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect." Is this a known problem? Any resolution?

I've never seen this problem with ACID.

However, searching on the error message a bit online it appears that it's likely there is a problem with the MS VC Redist (or another side-by-side library) on your machine. Have you had issues with Windows updates failing or anything of the sort?

Regardless, the fix will be to remove the offending library and reinstall the latest from Microsoft's website. You should be able to figure out what library is giving you trouble in the system event viewer in the administrator tools in control panel.

Ok - I worked it out. There seems to be subtle problem with the install on V64 in some cases. In short:

I did not have the Visual Studio 2005 runtimes on my box.
Acid installed - but also did not properly install the VS2005 runtimes on my box. It had a dependency that the install alone did NOT satisfy.

I installed Acid on my other x64 box and it worked GREAT. THEN I noticed that the VC2005 runtimes were already present before I did the Acid install in that box. I put two and two together.

So I downloaded the VS2005 redist from MS and installed it on the computer where Acid was failing and - guess what. Acid Pro 7 works great now.

So there is some odd-ball problem with the install and how it puts (or does not put) the VC redistributed package on some computers.

So there is nothing to delete. If you have this problem, just install the appropriate runtimes for yourself.

All is well here - except my regard for Sony tech support was destroyed in the process. The guy tried to tell me that Vista x64 is not supported. This is not true. The application is not a 64-bit app, but running under 64-bit Vista is supported and there are no statements to the contrary in any product docs for AP7. I asked the dummy to show me a document that specifically said "32-bit vista only", or "64-bit OS not supported", or something similar. He could produce nothing. What a bozo.

First off the Sony tech support specialist is not a bozo.
It doesn't take much to destroy your regard for the Sony support team, let alone calling them names!

He's absolutely right in saying that Sony does not support Vista 64.
Not supported means, Sony offers no guarentees, AP V7 will work withint Vista 64, nor will they offer fixes for the users running it.
If it works for some users, great, but that's at their own risk.

If and when Sony introduce a 64 bit version of AP, I'm sure the current users of V7 will be the first to know.

ACID Pro 7.0 is a 32-bit app, but it's installation and use under Vista 64 is fully tested and supported.

The installer is designed to detect whether the VC2005 redist is installed or not and force you to install it first (it is included in the installer for this purpose). You should not have to install it manually yourself beforehand. I'm not sure why you had to.

A little background:

Side-by-side installation is a Windows "feature" that is intended to allow Windows to have multiple versions of the same runtimes installed at the same time, it's supposed to internally select the proper one depending on what the app wants to do/use and offer that version of the runtime DLL.


I have multiple Vista 64 machines here in various states of Windows Update and some with SP1 and also a personal V64 machine at home. None of them have had troubles installing ACID Pro 7.0 and requiring that I install the runtimes.

If you have any more information that might help me to reproduce the issue I'll see what can be done to prevent it in the future.

Maybe there were remnants of an existing or partial unsucessful VC2005 install that A7 detected as a valid one ?

Just a thought ....
