Unfortunately I bought my current Dell when they installed Windows XP Media Center Edition. Despite keeping the XP side fully up to date, the Media Center side is stuck at version 2002. Result? - I cannot install Acid Pro 7. The underlying reason seems to be that Acid 7 needs Windows Media Player version 10 or later. Why? Luckily I have a couple of XP licences spare since I moved to Macs for all of the rest of my work but I will still have to go through yet another re-install and worry about my install count maxing out for Acid and Sound Forge. Anyway, fellow unfortunate Media Center users have been warned. The unfortunate part is I never use Media Center or Windows Media Player. I really like Acid - and SoundForge - but I wish they were not so tightly bound to the Microsoft software libraries. |

> Anyway, fellow unfortunate Media Center users have been warned. I feel for you. I remember way back warning people not to buy Media Center PC's because of all sorts of incompatibilities with video editing programs. It was common knowledge back then in the video community to steer clear of them at all costs. Don't feel band, my brother-in-law bought his son a Microsoft Zune MP3 player for his birthday. When he went to install the Zune software, it complained that his Windows Media Center PC was not compatible and refused to install! His only option was to upgrade to XP or a newer version of Media Center. Imagine that, he can't even use a Microsoft MP3 player because his Microsoft OS doesn't support it!!! No such problems with Apple iPod and iTunes. So Microsoft has caused this problem of incompatibility themselves. They are their own worst enemy. ~jr |

Thanks for the response. I entirely agree the problem is with Microsoft, not Sony. Acid and Sound Forge are the only reason I hang to the Dell. Since investing in an iMac and Logic I have no regrets - but Acid is still my favourite for working with loops. It just makes sense! The add-on's seduced me into the upgrade. The Windows situation on the other hand is a mess. I cannot upgrade to Vista because there is no driver for my Edirol DA-2496 audio interface. I have the Windows XP part up to SP3 but this seemingly makes no difference to the media centre part. Luckily I do have a couple of spare XP licences from PCs that have been scrapped as Daughters finished University. My one decision is do I hang to the Dell/Edirol or use Bootcamp and move everything to the iMac? I will probably stick with the Dell as it has plenty of life left in it yet and I do like the Edirol DA despite the driver let-down. |

Phew! Got it sorted. I now have plain, XP Home, SP-3 installed on my Dell and everything works. I haven't had a chance to try everything out but the welcome project sounds superb. I was a bit concerned about having used up my install count on Sound Forge and CD Architect but everything registered without a hitch. I would feel happier if could "park" my licences with Sony as I can with Macromedia/Adobe, or de-authorise a machine iTunes style. Anyway, it worked out ok in the end albeit after yet another Windows install. |
