Does anybody know if it is possible to run ACID in a Windows Embedded environment? I'm thinking about getting a "netbook" and configuring it to only run ACID as a host for VSTi's, etc. |

Can't answer specifically, but i'll note two things ... There's been some reported success of getting ACID (and Vegas) to run under Linux with WINE. This bodes well for your question. Many, if not most, netbooks are available with genuine Windows XP installed for the same price as a *nix version. If you're primarily wanting to run Sony's software then you should use their preferred OS. |

I'm running AP6 on my eeePC 901 with WinXP installed. Note that there is not a lot of SDD disk space outside Windows. I am running AP off the secondary drive, which is not the fast SLC drive used for Windows. AP is one of the few audio apps that will run off the slower drives. I am thinking of upgrading the secondary drive to a SLC (but they cost around $300). |

Acer's AspireOne is $349 with Windows XP and a 160GB hard drive. I think it's screen is quite a bit clearer than the eeePC too. |

One of the advantages of the eeePC, particularly the 901, is that it has no hard drive. This makes it faster and also the battery lasts longer. I have used my 901 all day in airports and offices without recharging - something I could never do with my laptop. There are now quite a few "netbook" options, including a Dell. They make a nice light portable recording studio. |

Check out the Lenovo IdeaPad S10. I just picked up two of them for my kids. It has a 10" display which is the largest in the industry. Really awesome little computer. Runs full XP and has an expansion card slot so you could buy a firewire card and connect it to a nice audio device if you'd like. BTW, jumbuk, you were responsible for my purchase. ;-) I saw a post you made a while back and checked the netbooks out and it was ideal for taking to school because it's so small yet a full blown XP computer. Thanks! ~jr |

I was actually thinking about the Acer, but wanted a more stable system. I know how stable XP Embedded can be from my experience with Digidesign Venue consoles...so was thinking about running an ACID only system to be my VSTi/Synth Rig. This is turning into an interesting discussion, though. |

"BTW, jumbuk, you were responsible for my purchase. ;-) I saw a post you made a while back and checked the netbooks out and it was ideal for taking to school because it's so small yet a full blown XP computer. Thanks!" - I want a commission, Lenovo! Glad it turned out Ok! Re the post about "a more stable system" - I had a eeePC 701 with Linux. I tried to like Linux, but I gave up after about the 7th time of reinstalling the OS (plus all my customised settings and apps etc). Maybe Linux works better with other hardware, but my experience is that it is too unstable for anything serious on the eeePC. |
