Subject:Acid Problem: Audio Device Setup?

I am trying to work on a remix and without any notice I get either shut down or and error message stating that microsoft sound mapper doesn't exist. I don't even have it set to MSM I have the audio device preference set to Mbox2 Pro. It's really not making my life any easier. I hope tech support can answer this question. (If I have to read our computer doesn't do that... I think I'll go nuts.) Thanks in advance. |

What is Vista using for your default audio output? Do you have audio hardware enabled on your motherboard? Peter |

Under sound I have Digidesign Mbox 2 Pro 1/2 Selected.... How do I set it as my default audio? How do I enable audio hardware on my motherboard? Under control panel I chose device mngr.. sound,video,game controllers.. there are only 2 choices 1st: Mbox 2 Pro... 2nd: SigmaTel High Def Audio (which I have disabled) Is there a different location I should be looking at? |

You should set the Sigmatel devices as your default Vista sound device. Why: If ACID is told to use the MBox as its output device using ASIO, then any attempt Vista makes to use it for its sound can cause conflicts and messages like you reported. Peter |

Yea, do yourself a favor and route all Vista sounds through the motherboard sound chip and leave the MBox just for your audio applications. Especially if you use 24 bit or 48K or 96K audio sample rate. Every sound in Vista is 16-bit, 44.1K. Say, for example, you are using ACID at 24-bit/48K and Vista needs to beep at you. The MBox needs to switch to 16/44.1 to play the beep and then back to 24/48K to play music again. This does not always happen seamlessly and often messes everything up. Take Peter's advice and isolate the MBox to your audio applications only and things will run a lot smoother. ~jr Message last edited on12/4/2008 4:50:09 AM byJohnnyRoy. |

I don't have anything hooked up to my old sound card. Does this mean I have to buy a pair of monitors for that? |

A simple way to solve this is to connect the outputs of your sound card to the line inputs (Aux 3/4) on the back of the MBox2.
