Old Computer - Big Vegas Files

OK, I need a new computer. But for now, how can I load 1GB MPG files into Vegas on XP 2.4 GHz 500MB RAM? When I try I get nothing but hourglass cursor. I've waited as long as twenty minutes but always have to to crash Vegas or re-boot.

Are there any special optimizations that will allow me to work with big files (>1GB) on my system?

My computer turns six years old this month. I do have 1GB of RAM and 2.8 GHz. The RAM may be an issue for you.

You can use this technique:

Using DGIndex and VFAPI to edit MPEG-2

to edit any size MPEG or VOB file on any version of Vegas, and it will be as fast as DV AVI. Pretty amazing stuff, and it uses nothing but free software. It sometimes takes 30-40 seconds to bring it in, but never more than that. Searching and moving around the timeline are often sluggish (although not if you use the technique outlined above).

Also, what version of Vegas are you using? I think V8 takes more horsepower and, even though it does a lot of neat things with MPEG-2 files (like smart editing), I think your older system might not be as "happy." I use Vegas 7.0d.

Having said all that, I put 4 GByte MPEG-2 files on my timeline all the time, even without the technique described above, and it works great.

V8 is way better with MPG.

That said, 500MB ram barely runs XP. Biggest bang for your buck is 2GB RAM.

Bring the MPG in, convert to DV/HDV immediately. That assumes you have hard drive disc space.

I have downloaded DGIndex but don't have a clue how to do what is suggested. The documentation is very dense and technical, I don't see anything about creating proxies or using VFAPI. Can anyone provide me with very clear instructions on how to create this AVI proxy to load on the Vegas time line?

Can anyone provide me with very clear instructions on how to create this AVI proxy to load on the Vegas time line? Here is a link to a post where I describe the process in detail. Note that I use DGIndex instead of DVD2AVI. It is the up-to-date version of that older utility (although DVD2AVI generally still works)
