Scene Detection when Importing DVD's

To import a video of a DVD I select "Import Media", navigate to the VOB files, and then wait while VMS adds the VOBs to my project media.

Is there a way to detect scenes or should I be importing DVD video differently?

Also, I've seen other posts suggesting the VOBs be converted to MPGs using a dedicated converter. Is this necessary to insure proper audio/video synchronization?

I always do a File - Import - DVD Camcorder Disc (which is designed to do the importing from a DVD). But neither way will detect scenes.

I supposed you could play the DVD through an analog converter and use Scenalyzer Live to scene detect based on visual changes.

Dan,
if "Import Media" is working for you then there's no need for a different application. However, in case you're experienceing any trouble like synch problems you can still try a different application to extract MPGs from the VOBs.

If you truly want scene detection, including places where the camcorder or authoring program didn't add chapter stops, then you definitely need to use the method already described, where you capture the analog output into Scenalyzer, using its optical detection mode. This will create individual files for each scene. You then put these on the Vegas timeline. Then, put the original video on another timeline, and line it up with the captured video. Finally, place markers at the beginning of each event. Then, delete the captured video timeline. You can then render this out to some dummy file. Use whatever file format renders the most quickly, which is probably DV. Make sure to "save project markers in media file" when you do this render.

Bring this file into DVD Architect. Verify that the markers have come across. Finally, replace the dummy file with the original VOB file.
