Version 8c soon

Just posted on CML-HD-PRO:

I work for Sony. You need to upgrade to Vegas 8 Rev. C which will be officially announced at IBC next week. This version supports "smart rendering" for all EX and PDW-700 frame rates and resolutions.

Rev C will be available for download shortly after IBC at no cost to existing Vegas 8 users and for approximately $234 from lower versions of Vegas. In addition, the Rev. C upgrade includes DVD Architect 5.0 with Blu-ray authoring capabilities.

Thanks for the heads-up! ;-)

Releasing a software patch to fix bugs is hardly a conference (IBC) worthy event. There must be more too it. I believe that is when Vegas 8.1 (64 bit) will be released - rumor of course.

Hope so. I'm getting the "Bluray 8.0C Blues".

I don't know what is EX. Is it AVCHD? Can we look forward to AVCHD smart rendering?

EX is a camera model (EX1 & EX3) from Sony.

Yea, I've only been waiting for this since they announced the beta testing. Remember? I never did get a followup email from the board administrators on that. :-(

Why would they post this news in another forum instead of here? Are all of us registered users just 'children of the milkman' or something?

I believe Juan Martinez is from the division of Sony that makes cameras, a different division to SCS who actually produce Vegas.

It's quite gratifying to know that they're so familiar with Vegas and DVDA!

Thanks for posting, Serena

CML is the Cinematographers Mailing List for cinematographers. This wasn't a general announcement, but a response to a question: "I took delivery of a new PDW-700 yesterday .............
I imported some clips into Vegas 7 and got another message saying it wasn't supported. "

"took delivery of a new PDW-700 yesterday " real nice!

Sounds good Serene. Will this include the m2tsplug.dll patch for AVCHD Long GOP?

I get the feeling this guy wasn't supposed to say anything :)

Congrats on the cam - very nice.

Regardless of any mentioned fixes this revision will address I am only concerned with certain fixes......

Most notably - support for XHA1 24f capture (does not work in Pro 8), fix of memory leak with HDV files (Vegas crashing after working in projects with 40+ .m2t files in 24f format), and finally having the cineform codec properly update without conflicts (install of 8 after 7 corrupts cfhd.dll and cineform version cannot be updated).

If the update does not address these (and we are talking about known issues since 8.0a) then Sony has their head up their a** and will not get my money for future upgrades. Having used Vegas since version 4 I have been sorely angered over Pro 8 and it's bugs.

Honestly, the only thing I use Vegas for anymore is for H.264 encoding, slow motion, and AVCHDs. Thats it. I have moved on to Premiere some time ago and am now picking up FCP a lot more.

Sad to note, Adobe is releasing CS4 on Sept 23 which means Adobe has released an update and now an upgrade in the same time it took Sony to drag its feet on 8C. Frankly I think the writing is on the wall in regards to who is Sony's intended market.

Is anyone here going to be at IBC this week?
If so, please stop at the Sony booths at stands 9.C10 / 9.A31 and see if you can find out anything.

Why would you use Vegas for slow motion when you have PP with optical flow for better quality?

TeeJay wrote on 9/9/2008, 3:39 AM
Grew very tired of waiting for 8C, so bought a Mac and Final Cut Studio2. The optical flow retiming is stunning! Very slow to render but the results are fantastic.
Not really enjoying editing in Final Cut after so many years in Vegas, probably just a difference in workflow but i must say that the quality of my exports have definately improved..

I've been using Vegas since version 4 and will continue to hang on to it for older projects but most new work will be with Final Cut in mind. With that said, there are many things that Vegas still does more intuitively, it's just a shame that it has not been more reliable for me.

One major problem I have even thinking about FCP is that it requires a Mac, and all the Mac owners I know have a strange supercilious facial expression. Frankly, I'm not prepared to go through the surgery.

have to say i'm with peter on that one. i've used mac's with some regularly, and they're okay, but were vastly over priced last time i look at them (admittedly quite some time ago).

as peter rightly points out, there's nothing quite as irritating as a mac fanboi. that said, i used to love winding them up by asking where the right click was on the mouse.

a lot of my friends edit on fcp, and they all tell me how fantastic it is, but at the same time complain about this bug and that bug, just like we do here.

i would move tomorrow to a nle that didn't have a user group complaining of problems - ha, and pigs will fly.

Maybe go towards some kind of "approved dedicated system" ? I mean, a page somewhere on Sony website that recommends a system built piece by piece (with specs, brands and model #s for evey piece of gear) that would be bullet proof so everything would flawlessly work ?
Oh... yeah... Everyone would probably wind up with its own mod/receipe and pigs would then start to fly, lol

That would be nice, but that's what user groups are for. I have my specs documented on the PC Equipment page of my web site that John Cline originally spec'ed out and many of us have built computers around this motherboard and processor combination and my system is the most solid one I have every built. An Intel motherboard with an Intel processor. Who'da thunk? It simply works. I edit in HDV using Vegas every day and it doesn't crash at all.

I built my computer using an Intel Motherboard (D975XBX2) and Intel CPU (Q6700) and still Vegas crashes a lot. Although I edit AVCHD, not HDV.

I built a system for Premiere once based on that. The system was crap. so I decided to never use recommendations again (really, what passes for a recomendation? it RUNS?)

Ditto with an Asus MB & AMD CPU. Since Vegas 4, rock solid!
