Lately I've been using only sonar 7 because of this. I haven't been able to trace it down to anything. At random intervals acid will suddenly freeze, then it causes the whole system to rapidly start slowing down until I can't even move the mouse cursor (within 5 minutes?). And really, it's random. Even if I'm not doing anything acid will freeze then cause that crap. I've never been able to force end Acid because task manager never opens up. It's happened two times yesterday. What the hell is going on?

What the hell is going on?

I have no idea bro.

In your system specs it says that the OS you use is: other???

What is "other"?

How do you have your system tweaked?

Other than turning off all the gui stuff what else do you do if any?

What types of projects do you run? Size wise how many tracks of loops/one shots?

Any virtual instruments anywhere? What names and version numbers?

Are you seeing a slow climb of cpu usage? Ram usage increases?

Are you overclocking your cpu?

Did you change any of acids default settings in any way?

I'm not saying acid 6 is perfect...but in all the time I used it with my old amd xp 3200 and now my vista 64 system with my dual quad xeons have I seen this.

I really would like to help but your not giving me enough to go by.

Ed.

The heck? I thought I had it set to Vista.

Vista Ultimate SP1
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600, stock speeds (not OC'd)
M-Audio Delta 1010LT (latest drivers)
4GB DDR2 800 memory

Not sure what you mean by system tweaked.

Disabling Aero doesn't affect it. What else should I try exactly?

Types of projects? Music. They can get pretty big, but this is happening at any size project.

Quite a few. Here's the complete list:
Cakewalk z3ta+
Korg Wavestation
Cakewalk Sessiondrummer 2
Korg Polysix
Korg MS-20
Arturia Minimoog V
Korg LegacyCell
Steinberg HALion 3.1
Cakewalk Dropzone
Cakewalk Dimension LE
Cakewalk Rapture LE

When Acid freezes CPU usage goes through the roof (both cores start working at 100% and stay there). RAM usage starts climbing also. It's hard to tell how much it gets to exactly because I have to push the reset button on the computer (although I imagine it goes to 100%).

Acid's settings haven't been changed.

Are you using the MIDI i/o on the Delta?

When I've had similar sounding symptoms (on a similar rig) it's come down to either a midi interface problem (also m-audio which Peter can tell you more about) or a plug in problem (waves in particulr for me).
What was the last thing you added/updated? That's a good place to start the forensics.
But the most thorough diagnostic is to clear everything and start adding one vst back at a time. Even better, if you've got an clean image of your system to reload before adding back your pug ins.

It sounds like a lot but in reality you'll be spending just as much time guessing and getting pissed off (and not making music). Starting with a clean slate is a much more positive approach and chances are you'll actually work out what the problem is and get back to making music in a much better state of mind. Good Luck.

Even without a MIDI device hooked up it still happens.

I'll take all of my VSTs out and start putting them back in to see it one is the culprit. But if it was for some reason a VST or the MIDI i/o that was causing why is it only happening in acid?

Which version of ACID are you running? I'm running AP 6.0d under Vista, and generally it seems to work OK. I too would suspect a plugin problem.

Just a couple of suggestions here.

1. For a while, start Task Manager before you run ACID and then you can access it when ACID starts to grind to a halt. You should be able to confirm that it's the ACID process that's going into a loop.

2. You may want to inspect your system event logs to see if there are any odd things happening while this slowdown is occurring.

3. Microsoft has a utility that you can use to log and inspect detailed process activity. It's called "Process Monitor", and it can be downloaded from [link]http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645.aspx. Careful with this...it generates a huge amount of logging info, so you won't want it gathering process data for very long. Given your symptoms it may be difficult to get the utility started once the problem has started...you may be able to launch it without doing any data capture and then switch over to it once things start to go south to turn on the logging.

Hope this helps.

So you were using the MIDI ports on the Delta?

Did you just disconnect the device or did you disable the MIDI ports for the Delta in ACID?

What MIDI device was hooked up?

Are you using any other MIDI hardware ports?

But if it was for some reason a VST or the MIDI i/o that was causing why is it only happening in acid?

This is what we are trying to figure out.

Thanks,
Peter
