Subject:VST conflict, Acid 6.0

I've used Acid 4.0 for several months on a new Vista laptop with no problems. It stopped working yesterday, couldn't get it running, so I downloaded 6.0d thinking that might fix it. Didn't help :-) The startup screen locks everytime it gets to "initializing VST instruments....". Any ideas on what the conflict could be? 4.0 had performed flawlessly until yesterday. Thanks for your ideas!

No real ideas here about what is happening to freeze the VST loading phase, but have you tried using the Windows System Restore facility to go back to your system's state before you started having the problem?

(FYI, for System Restore: Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore.)

In case you've never used it before, System Restore is really effective at going back to the settings you had in effect at an earlier time, and it works better in Vista than it ever did under XP. And a restore is reversible. One caution: though Microsoft states that your files are unaffected, I have seen cases where new files that I downloaded since the restore do not appear after the restore - but mysteriously they reappear if you undo the restore action. So you might want to copy any recently-downloaded files onto an external drive or memory stick before you do the restore.

Good luck...

thanks, Patrick....yes, I have tried to restore, and have gone WAY back in the calendar, but that didn't help for some reason. I've also installed Vegas 8.0 to see if that might help (mentioned in other posts) but no change. So I continue to mess with it. Thanks for the suggestion, I appreciate it :-)

Did you install any new VST Instruments or VST FX?
Did you update any existing VST Instruments or FX?

Some times a restore point will leave VSTs installed in the VSTPlug-ins folder. This can cause serious havoc.

First thing to do is to move all of your VSTs into a safe place.

Then start ACID. With nothing to scan it should start up.

Exit ACID.

Move some of the plug-ins you know work back to where they were.

Start ACID

If everything goes ok, then repeat until you find the culprit.

In ACID 6 there are some other things to try.

Thanks, Peter.....I found the VST plugins folder in Program Files, and moved it's contents to a generic named folder. The only file in the folder was "installer.phdata". After moving the file, I tried to open both Acid 4.0 and 6.0, but neither one would open any further than before. So maybe it's not a VST problem after all?
Any ideas on anything else I can try?
I really don't want to wipe Vista and install XP (even though I prefer XP). Is there any good option short of that?
thanks much for your time and help,
Mark

Where are your VSTs located?

In regedit, locate the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\VST

Where does this point to?

Peter
