Software Stops Playing After Attempting to Edit -Sound Forge - PC

I am using Sound Forge Audio Studio ver. 9, with Windows Vista. I can record, and playback the recording. However, when I click the sound window to edit the file, everything stops working. No edit capability, no function. The curser does not move. If I save the file as is, in mp3 format. it will play back the unedited file. Can anyone assist me with this? I've uninstalled and reinstalled the software. Tried several times contacting Sony Technical support with unsatisfactory results. Never had this problem with any of the earlier versions using Windows XP.
