Syncronization Problems with MOTU 2408

Has anyone succesfully been able to sync up via MTC to a
2408 and have it useable? In testing this, I recorded a
1000hz tone onto a Tascam MDM deck and then copied it via
the 2408 to Vegas.
I then played the two back together and they are close to
staying locked. If I save the Vegas file and re-enter the
program, pull up the file- play it along with the Tascam
original, they drift quite a bit. I watched this on an
ocilloscope. What this means is that I can't download
tracks to Vegas, edit them and get them placed back on the
multitrack to their exact spot if I save the file! I do
realize that MTC is only accurate to 1/30 of a second but
the jitter (variation of the synching is killing me).

I'm running this on a 450MHZ 100Mhz buss pc with 130 megs of
memory and a Seagate 10,000rpm 5.1ms seek disk. I don't
think I need a more powerful system (I hope)...

After I get this fixed, I am going to be very excited to use
Vegas with my clients. I think it is going to be a great
product! I have had high respect for Sonic Foundry
products.

Doug, I am doing this with Tascam DA-88's with no problems. Flying
tracks to Vegas via the 2408, edit and fly them back to the DA-88's.
I am doing this in trigger playback only mode though (Preferences,
Sync, Advanced, check Trigger Playback Only - do not chase.) I
don't seem to get any drift but the songs I was working on were only
about 7 minuets long each. I'll have to try the chase mode and see
what happens but in the past I have never gotten this to work for me
on other software. mcm

The best way to achieve sync with Vegas is to have a common digital
clock. This allows the hardware to handle timing and Vegas merely
deals with triggering of starts.

The alternative - having Vegas chase the audio - results in a Vegas
doing resampling on the fly. While this will work for general sync,
it is not the best way to go. It also uses CPU - big time. If you
have a 4 bus mixer set up, this can add a lot of resampling.

For streaming in and out of Vegas from an MDM
1) Use a digital connection between the MDM and your hardware. Make
your ADAT or Tascam PC interface card use the MDM's clock on record
to Vegas.
2) Set Vegas to trigger vs chase
3) If you have a heavy load of tracks and busses, increase your
Synchronization delay time in the Advanced page for sync.
4) If you are only streaming in recorded material, turn off SRP. This
lightens the load by not having Vegas playback during the record.
5) If you are recording only portions - i.e. punching in - from an
MDM, create an empty event or events before you start recording. Make
sure the event(s) are selected before starting the master. Vegas will
note have to create events on the fly and will record only into the
selected events.

There are some sync problems in Vegas 1.0 that we are working on. An
update is on its way to solve these problems.

Thanks
Peter

Man, you are accomplishing something that we have never been able to
do reliably with our MOTU 2408 and DA-88's. Are you using MTC from an
SY-88 or external device? If you don't mind I would like to discuss
how you are accomplishing this with you via e-mail if at all possible?

Thanks ...
