Well, I have to go on record here along with everyone else who is trying the Forge 5 beta, and say it is a huge disappointment to see one of the original and best programs stumble and fall...an old friend that needs some serious rehab but hasn't got the support it needs. Obviously SF threw in the towel on CDA, and even though I don't use it much, I have colleagues who do. I still admire the CDA option as it is the genesis of SF's brilliant Xfade approach which works so well in Vegas. It does seem that they've improved the default Xfade in 5 but w/o the visual feedback of CDA or Vegas...I still havn't thrown enough at this to be sure if they upped this or not though. I am disgusted that they didn't even attempt to make the sync to TC work...that function is so user unfriendly that we've given up! Again Vegas handles this elegantly. Look, I've used everything out there and currently have systems that use PTools (old and new)...Soundscape R'ed/Mixtreme...Wavelab/softsynths/m Audio 2496 and a system that runs only Vegas/Acid/Forge/Siren...Forge 5 won't be making the cut on any box in my arsenal. At this point in my work if and when I need 24/96 or even 24/48 I guess it'll be tweaked on Wave Lab. It's weird to see a company so fractured in its' so called business model, that they can develop something as elegant as Vegas and then turn around and not be able to bring there cornerstone app into the 21st century. Foundry needs to rethink its' approach and I don't mean layoffs to appease Wall St...which isn't working anyway. I think the problem starts at the top...Yo RB! You're out of touch with your core market and apparantly overpaid. Is anyone really going to Best Buy to buy Vegas!?@#$ You're alienating your base and Wall St. will find out eventually, because the Pros out here will spread the ugly word and then the media will lick its' chops. This is the modern world and we love to make fun of failures...just check out the most popular Super Bowl ad this year...Aw look at the cute little dead sock puppet! Of course by then you'll have cashed out and we'll all be left with an Opcode situation. A sad day indeed. |

I totally agree with everything Wilson's said - below I've pasted a reply to I wrote on another thread: ---------- Like most other people here, I'm anything but impressed with version 5. What we've got is a few cosmetic changes (many of which aren't actually beneficial - I personally prefered the play mater on 4.5; easier to read and more useful) and a lot of ommisions and oversight. I think that the CD writing 'features' are a case of treating your pro and semi-pro customers like kids! By discontinuing CD Architect I think we assumed you were going to incorporate the whole thing into the new version of Sound Forge. What you've given us is nothing short of a joke! I've also noticed, for me at least, the scrolling and zooming doesn't seem to be as smooth and fast as 4.5. I assumed you would have worked on things such as FX and processing, which quality-wise are way below par compared with the competition. I also think if you're removing the native FX and making them Direct X, it would still be nice to have a toolbar to access them as this can become a pain when you've got a lot of plug-ins installed. Anything else? Well, I could go on... All in all though, I really do think that Sonic Foundry can't go on ignoring it's core customer base. Version 5 seems to me to be a half- hearted, hastily and badly botched together update. Sonic Foundry - you can't come out with products like this and truely expect them to be taken seriously. Ok, rant over.
