First impressions: the new look and feel is nice, but there is a lot less in the way of new features than expected (or hoped for!): * The "create CD" feature is utterly useless for those prodicing release CDs (or in fact anyone wanting to do more than dump tracks to disc). With Wavelab offering full DAO CD mastering, this is something that SF are going to have to improve. Put CD Architect in there! Most will stay with 4.0 or 4.5 - or use Wavelab - otherwise. This half-baked attempt at a CD mastering feature is SF5's biggest failing. CD Architect is still the best audio CD mastering tool available; what a shame it appears to have been abandoned. * Peak file building is still woefully slow, meaning loading a CD's worth of audio files is still an ordeal, even on a fast machine. * It's still not possible to cancel loading of a file in direct mode - when I hit "cancel" I"m not saying "stop building the peak file" - I'm saying "stop loading he file". Anyone who's ever acidentally double-clicked on a 2 hour wave file will know all too well the pain this can cause. * Surely the release version won't require a seperately- purchased MP3-saving plug-in??? On the positive side: * Perfect Clarity audio is spectacularly good when saving some types of music file (classical music routinely compresses to less than half its original size; heavily- limited pop music fares less well). Any reason we can't real-time preview PCA files, though, when Siren can play them in real time? * The new Vegas-style plug-in chainer is exactly what was needed. - Anthony |
