I am using SF 4.5 and I like the Graphic Dynamics tool to compress, noise gate, and normalize all at once. Problem is I hear some hiss in the recorded dialogue of my files. I'm using anywhere from 3:1 to 5:1 compression, threshold at about -36db and 120% output gain. I can't set the noise gate any higher or I'll lose some of the recording. I never used hardware compressors before. Is this hiss just a side-effect of the compression? Thanks for any input. - D |

Its possible the compressor is injecting the hiss. You are going to need to do a little troubleshooting. Instead of doing all of the steps at once, do one at a time and see if it makes any difference. You shouldn't need to use the gate at all. Why so much compression? Personally I wouldn't go more than 3:1. Can this device act as a peak limiter as well as a compressor? If so you might want to try that angle of attack, which will increase your overall average sound level. What about the source? Is it hiss-free? It could be a microphone/cable problem.
