Picture turning red!

Videojohn wrote on 4/19/2008, 2:27 AM
Hi,
I am working on a project HDV 720p (in Vegas 8 Pro, update 8.0b). I have imported the footage in the compuiter with Connect HD, and converted the files in .avi intermediate.

What happens is that from time to time, the pictures disappear. The envelop remains but the inside turns red and the preview wnindow is black. When this happens, I restart the computer and it is back to normal. But this happens frequently and it's thus difficult to work like this.

What can be the cause of the problem?
Thank you.

In my experience, red frames are a result of Vegas not being able to read those frames for what ever reason. A bad capture... a couple of dropped frames.... etc.

Usually you can trim out the red frames without issue. If it's only one or two frames then you won't notice in the final file, but more than that and it will appear as a skip or a jump.

Yes but here what's happens is not only some frames, but the whole timeline turning red!!! And then no picture can be read (only black in the previous windows)!!!

I've had this problem with a corrupt veg file and a with a hard drive that was going bad. I would check those two things.

I've had this problem too, with MOV's generated in FCP, and with some 720P MXF's /Raylight.

Is your Project fps and resolution exactly the same as the media fps and resolution?

The only time I've seen this is if I've incorrectly set my virtual memory settings and the pc is completely out of resources. In my case, not a vegas error but an incorrect windows setting and I've tried to do too much in vegas or open two instances of vegas.

Corrupt file?
I would means that ALL the files that I captured are captured ARE corrupted? Because when one file starts to be red, all the others follow! AN dwaht I have to do to fix the problem (until the next red-crash) is to exit Vegas and open it again.

Can this mean that all files are corrupted?

Or can it be my hard disk that is "dying"

Another phenomeneon that happens (and generally, when the files are going to turn red) is that I read a picture in the timeline and during reading, flashes/frames of other pictures (that are not present in any video track above or below the track being read) appear!
What can it be?

This happens to me if i try to import stills that are maybe too big, for eg, last week i dragged some tif. files on to the timeline and they were instantly "red", and playback would not work. Having experienced it before i simply converted the tif's to png's and everything worked fine. It seems to me this happens when Vegas can't handle a certain file type or size...
Unfortunately, this probably doesn't explain why it is happening with your AVIs, maybe they are converted with a codec that Vegas doesn't totally approve of?

I captured the files .avi with connect HD (the software they advertised to capture HD and edit in Vegas with no problem...) SO it shouldn't be a format issue.
But waht else? I really don't know. I read another thread in the forum with somenone having exactly the same problem.

I came across this while capturing old tapes to export to DVD. The thumbnail preview of a small area would be red, instead of a picture, and Vegas didn't like it if I tried to click my cursor in that area. I don't know why, but I just re-captured that small portion and spliced it back in.

Again, in my case, it is not a litte portion of a clip but ALL CLIPS IN THE TIMELINE THAT TURN RED!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi VideoJohn,

You are experiencing a major bug in Vegas Pro 8's inability to manage memory properly ... as your project grows in size Vegas will simply start to have any number of errors due to poor coding.

1. Red Frames ... error.
2. Black Frames ... error.
3. Exception errors.
4. 'Sorry for the inconvenience' error.
5. Just disappears off your screen error.
6. Won't render error.
7. Starts to render but just decides it doesn't want to anymore ... but lets the counter go up and the timer run down to zero.

Enjoy!

We're all waiting for Vegas Pro 8c ... which seriously needs to have virtual and RAM memory usage sorted.

FIX IT SONY ... IT'S BEEN SIX MONTHS NOW!

Darren you hit the nail on the head.

It just can't manage the memory.
I'm about ready to pull my hair out with this you think at least
Sony would address the issue already.

Yeh Laura,

It's getting really scary now ... I'm forging ahead with my feature ... using any number of workarounds ... I'm basically stuck with 10 x 10 minute projects ... 10 minutes seems to be the upper limit for my 720p m2t project ... but Vegas still baulks most times at rendering my 10 minute chunks for viewing in the local cinema ...

Sony in the US told me ages ago that the memory thing was a 'known issue' ... Vegas just keeps using memory and the PF usage keeps going up and up during render then it just falls over ...

It's a total PITA!

Here's hoping we'll all have some hair left by the time Vegas 8c comes out with ... hopefully ... a fix for the instabilities in 8b.

Cheers,
