Subject:Reducing distortion: advice?

Greetings!

I'm writing in after searching the database. I didn't find
my answer there so I address you folks to ask:

Source = DAT tape recorded at 48800Hz, 16 bit Stereo

Problem = Some clipping occurs on this source tape.

Task = record material and attempt to reduce clipping from
source.

Impossible? Please advise.

Thank You.

Bonjour!

J'ai cherché mais n'ai pas trouvé la réponse dans ce forum.
Voici la situation:

Source = cassette DAT enregistré a 48800Hz, 16 bit Stereo

Problème = Distortion occasionnelle.

Travail a faire = Enregistrer ce materiel et essayer de
réduire cette distortion qui vient de la source DAT.

Impossible? Que disez vous?

Merci!

Yes what you're asking is a very difficult task. Sonic
Foundry has a "restore clipped peaks" plugin. I've used it
and it works pretty well for doing the exact thing you're
asking for. At miniumum it reduces the harshness of the
clipped peaks. I don't recall, exactly what set of their
plugins offers this feature off the top of my head, I'm
thinking it's probably in the "Noise Reduction" plugins
set. I'm sure Ted will gladly impart this information to
you or else you can search through their "products" section
on this website.

Hello Brian.

Yes, I *thought* there was a plugin for this... I'll look
into the "Noise Rduction" package. You're right: it isn't
easy rescuing clipped audio (speech in this case...)

Thank you. I appreciate your prompt reply.

Anyone else think of another solution?

Hi Maurice,

The clipped peak restoration in Noise Reduction works well
for brief clips, but is not intended to restore something
that is badly distorted. If the entire tape is clipped,
Noise Reduction may not be the thing to use. You can
always download a demo of Noise Reduction from our
downloads page and try it out.
