Subject:difference in saving MP3 files using plug-in or as .wav with Mpeg3 compression

I read through the FAQ and the Forum for other questions
about MP3's and found some items related to my questions,
but not really adequate answers...

I'm wanting to save MP3 files for sale on my website. I
have found that you can save as:
a .wav file type using Mpeg3 compression format. Is this
the same as what the industry would call an MP3 file or
does it pass for "MP3" format?

I also purchased the MP3 plugin, however, I have noticed
that the file sizes are smaller for the wav compressed
using MP3 compression than the actual MP3 type (using the
plug-in).

Which file type is better to use? Can I just rename
the .wav saved with MP3 compression to a .mp3 or should I
use the actual plug-in?

Does it matter to any media players what the extension is?
i.e. if I leave it named .wav, will more media players open
it up? How will most players recognize the file?
