How to copy effects from one clip to another ?

will-3 wrote on 4/1/2008, 10:31 AM
We have a bunch of clips on the timeline.

The are all show with a green screen background.

All talking heads with the same lighting, etc.

Once we apply the chromakey effect to the first clip... is there any way to just copy that effect as it is setup to all the rest of the clips on the time line?

Any way to copy effects to different clips... same time line or another?

Thanks for any help.

You can try right-mouse-button / paste event attributes, but i don't recall if that copies effects. It's worth a try.

Another option that might be easier is to have all the green screen clips on the same track by themselves, then add chroma key as a track effect.

If that doesn't work, you can save it as a preset.
Then you click the FX button and call it up.

Hi,

That is a very simple task:

1. select the clip that you want to use as the master for the attributes.
2. perform a "Copy".
3. select all clips that you want to inherit the just copied attributes.
4. perform "Paste Event Attributes" on those clips.

Beware however - the target clips will loose their old attributes, if they had any.

A beatiful technique that I learned first after using the application for a YEAR!!!

Also remember that you can add an FX to any media in the "Project Media list". This effect would affect all clips that belong to this media.

However, copying and pasting an effect from the timeline to the Project media bin is not possible, and would be a nice addition to a future Vegas version... Nobody is 100% perfect ;)

There are several ways. I'll give you three (3):

1. Right-click the first event and select Copy (Ctrl+C), then select all the other clips and right-click on one of them and select Paste Event Attributes. The plug-ins and cropping will be pasted into the other events.

2. Save the FX in the Plug-in Chain on the first clip as a Plug-In Package and then use the that Package on the other clips. Plug-In Packages are great for saving your favorite chain of FX.

3. Add the FX at the Track level. This will affect all of the clips on the track.

For chromakey, I would apply the FX at the track level as long as all of the clips were from the same session with the same lighting. You can also save as a plug-in package and apply the package to the track (don't forget to go back and remove it from the first clip). ...oops, that's 4 ways... ;-)

Hi Christian.

"Beware however - the target clips will loose their old attributes, if they had any."

I don't see this behaviour for all attributes. If I paste attributes such as video fx, they are added to what the clip already had.

Couldn't he just add the effects once to the track?

Is there a way to copy/paste track FX (not event FX)?

@David-Williamson

You can easily copy filter chains from one track and paste to another using the FxAssist tool in HappyOtterScripts. Here's a demo.

AKA the HappyOtter at https://tools4vegas.com/. System 1: Intel i7-8700k with HD 630 graphics plus an Nvidia RTX4070 graphics card. System 2: Intel i7-3770k with HD 4000 graphics plus an AMD RX550 graphics card. System 3: Laptop. Dell Inspiron Plus 16. Intel i7-11800H, Intel Graphics. Current cameras include Panasonic FZ2500, GoPro Hero11 and Hero8 Black plus a myriad of smartPhone, pocket cameras, video cameras and film cameras going back to the original Nikon S.

or use the free EnDisEffects script available here: https://www.focusonvegas.com/endiseffects-script/

Similar to the tool in HOS or Vegasaur but free, works here on VP18.
