Subject:SF7 Warning when opening or saving file

I received an error message on SF7 when I saved a 24 bit 48 kHz mono WAV file. I've seen this happen on 16 bit 44.1 kHz files as well. The error message is the same on saving and opening the file, except for the word "opening" or "saving" is different.

Here's what it says when I open the file after the save error:

"Warning: an error occurred while opening one or more files. An error occurred reading the file. Make sure you have read access to the file/folder and that it is not corrupted."

I checked, and I do have read/write access to the folder.

There is also a "Details" button on the error message. Click "Details" reveals the following:

"An error occurred reading embedded information in (file name). The embedded information will be ignored."

What does this mean, and how do I cure this problem? I notice that the markers and regions I created in the file are gone - maybe that's the corrupted information?

I am getting this error in SF9. This just started happening recently, and I think it may by partly due to my installing of Vegas Pro 8.0 and the new Sony media Manager. I tried uninstalling, and then reinstalling, and its still giving me these issues. This also prevents the batch converter from working properly. My next step is to uninstall and search through the registry and clean out any references to see if that fixes it.

My guess is that this has something to do with .sfk files

Anyone else getting this besides shauntoole and myself? I am running on XP with a pentium 4 3.3 Ghz with 2 Gigs of ram.

Update: I completely uninstalled it, cleared out my registry, restarted, reinstalled only Sound Forge 9.0, and I am still getting this issue. Has anyone else seen anything like this?

I figured out the issue for me, perhaps it will solve the issues in SF 7.0

The reason why I was getting the errors was because my application data folder somehow got set to read only. This is the folder where your temporary files and recordings are stored. Because it was set to read only, once the temp file was created by opening the file, it wouldn't allow any changes to be made to it.

To fix this, go to Preferences Menu under the General tab. There it gives the path to the directory where you store your temp files and recordings. Go there in Explorer and make sure it is set to read/write. If it was set to read only, that was probably the problem.

I am not sure how the folder got set to read only, because I know that I didn't do it, but it all works now. Best of luck with SF 7.0 shauntoole. I hope this works for you.

Thanks for the info, Homero. I also am running XP Pro, but on a much older and slower PC. Nonetheless, those folders shouldn't be set to read only, and I don't know how they got that way either.

I've tried moving the temp files folder between drives, but the problem persists. I should note that the problem is intermittent, and hasn't appeared in a while. It may also be related to having unsaved edits in more than one file open in Sound Forge at the same time. Seems like a limitation that shouldn't exist, to me.

I tried something that worked: making an edit in a file, such as deleting a couple of frames, then saving the file seemed to clear up the problem. Not much help if your file is exactly the length it needs to be, is it?

By the way, I noticed on XP that the read-only attribute of every folder is set to "read-only" with a gray check box, usually meaning some but not all files or subfolders are set to "read-only." Clearing the check box doesn't seem to do anything, as when I go back and look at the folder's properties, the check box is still checked and gray.

Problem just occurred again. I tried to save the file and got the error message. However, when I re-opened the file I found the changes I had made were saved, even though the error message implied they were not saved.

I checked the folder of the file I was working on - I have read/write access to the folder. Didn't check the work folder at the time of the error. Re-opening the file, modifying it, and saving it all work normally now. No clue why this happens.
