that's quite a read, hard to understand too, I wonder what Vegas was like way back then. Judging by that it must have had very different functionality. Might have been from when Vegas was audio only.

Indeed it was.
Vegas Pro was the very first release of Vegas and I remember it well.
I was running a 3/4" A/B roll suite at the time and bought it to do audio sweetening.
3/4" was limited to 2 audio tracks and, since you didn't want to bounce analog audio too much, I wanted at least 4 (if not more) tracks.
Vegas made my life much easier then and still does today :-)
