Sony AVC versus Main Concept

I want to encode some HDV down to 960x540 H.264 to embed in Flash Players.

The Sony AVC codec and the Main Concept AVC/AAC codec will both encode H.264, right?

What's the story behind there being 2 similar codecs in Vegas?

Which is better?

The MC codec allows you to specify CBR/VBR and single or 2 pass encoding. The Sony codec does not, although it has a CABAC/CAVLC parameter that I am not familiar with.

I find that for a given bitrate I get better results with the MC codec when I use the 2 pass VBR mode.

That is simple. The Sony AVC encoder is much more deloped, also for HDV 1440x1080. The mainconcept AVC encoder was licened earlier.

For 960x540 you can use both - but I would tend to the Sony AVC encoder.
