Hi,

The volume level of the recording I'm working on fades in
and out (due to mic failure), pretty drastically
sometimes. I'm wondering if there's anyway to bring the
all levels to a standard volume.

My loudest points are about -6db and my quietest points are
around -26db.

The songs fade in and out so I can't just normalize.
Should I use the limiter then normalize? Could I limit it
even close to that much?

I appreciate any help,

-ck

Use a drastic compression (30:1) with the treshold set a -30 dB.

Good luck, Arrigo.

One method that works fairly well is to use the graphic dynamics
processor. You can manually draw a compression curve to limit the
loud material and boost the soft material. Do this by drawing a curve
that is to the right of the unity gain (diagonal) line near the top
and to the left of the unity gain line at levels of useable material
below that. Anything that is to the left of the unity gain line on
the graph will get boosted by the amount that it is above the line
(in the OUT direction). You will have to play around with the curve
points to find where they work the best. Keep in mind, however, that
if your material contains any appreciable amount of noise or hiss, it
will be brought up using this method (or any other, for that matter).

Good luck.
