Subject:input levels

i understand that in order to get the best signal to noise
ratio, one must record as hot as one can....my question now
becomes which input do i monitor this by? for instance,
say i want to record from my keyboard into sound forge,
using an sblive (iknowitsucks, but im VERY low on $$$$)
anyways, do i adjust the keyboard input? or do i rely on
the record control adjustment located on the mixer for the
soundcard. Im assuming that one would play as loud as
possible without distorting the keyboard and then to tune
in the mixer....any clarification on my glaring ignorance
would be appreciated.
