How to use the preview on External Monitor option?

i want to be sure about how to use the preview on external Monitor option. Do i have to connect an extra monitor to my display card and click the preview on external Monitor icon to have my video preview on the external monitor?

Please let me know if it is done differently.

Yes you have to do that. However, you also need to configure that display first. First on Windows, with the right maximum resolution of the LCD monitor, and then on Vegas, by right cliking on the PREVIEW Window and selecting the LAST option on that menu.
