Subject:Removing room ambience

I am piecing together some spoken word tracks, and one of
the tracks was recorded in a large echoy room. The rest of
the tracks were recorded in a nice dead studio.

Are there any plug-ins that do the opposite of a reverb --
that is to take away the echoy sound of a large room? I am
new at the audio editing business and from what I've heard
this was impossible in the bad-old analog tape days. In
the modern world of Sound Forge and Direct-X can this be
done?
