Subject:Sound Forge v.4 recording problem

Not the usual fight with a video driver on playback,
causing warbling/lock-up.

Since "upgrading" my audio workstation from win95 8gb to
win98 10.4gb (ide maxtor 91021U2), I find that Guitar
Studio and Sound-Forge v.4 each make a pig's ear of
recording above 22,000 sampling rate.

What is really annoying is that whilst these "flagship"
expensive dinasours can't record properly, the el-cheapo
thing that comes with win98 has no problem at all.

Oh yes - I downloaded and tried that awful "Goldwave" SF lookalike to
see - and that has no problem. (I mention these other applications in
the hope it may be of some use - they seem to "record" in a different
way?)........

To be clear. SF will record and produce a file, which, if
saved and replayed through ANY application will have a
constant warble, and sporadic clicks. The problem occurs during
recording - not during replay. (100% faithful reproduction of a bad
recording!)

I am told that ISIS Maxi studio suffers the same thing and
ESDI or SCSI hard drives are the answer - IDE drives are
always thermally recalibrating..... mmmmm!!!!??? What?
constantly recalibrating?

For SF/4 replaying of existing (good) wav files is no
problem, at any zoom. (8mb AGP - modest but it works..)

So: Summary win95 all was well; Win98 (1st ed.) plus a
maxtor drive, bag of rats.

Any input would be welcome - we can still use tape machines!

My stuff - AMD/K62/400; 128mb ram; Chaintech CT5AGM2 mobo;
Sis AGP card; Adi monitor; 3 scsi CDroms; Symbios card; SB Live!
card (somebody has to use them!).

CD copying works OK. Most things works fine. Weird stuff -
sometimes in either Outlook Express or a word processor, I
can type faster that the stuff appears on the screen - like
an old XT!

I'm stumped about this - any offers?
e-mail direct to me if possible - this is urgent stuff!
