You won't be able to open a .mid file in SF. SF deals only with audio data. A .mid isn't actually sound, merely a set of performance parameters that tell a sound module (either internal or external)what to do. You might have seen the MIDI SDS file support, which is where you got the idea from, but that's not the same thing as a .mid file. What you need is a sequencing program. Hope this helps you.
