Subject:Track levels in ACID - rendering to wav, then to CD

I'm having problems with the final mix of my tracks, which I burn to CD. The problem is that, what they sound like on headphones, on the speaker system, and from the final CD track, are three noticeably different things. I've been doing the final mix on the cans, but I think they overcook the bass as the CD track is lacking it. Mixing it from a PC sub woofer speaker system seems to do the opposite - i.e. what sounds balanced, then has too much high end on the CD track. Are the above normal and do I just need to invest in some better cans? Another question. How do you print out the screen to get a hard copy of your project? cheers Matt Bourne London |

Never mix on cans. Use cans to monitor when recording and doing overdubs. Ideally you should monitor on as 'clean' a monitoring system as possible. If you can't afford a proper studio monitoring system try plugging into your hi-fi. Alternatively, see if you can rig up a way of mixing onto a cassette so that you can listen on your hifi, on your walkman, in your car etc.... Pro studios will have different monitoring systems for checking different things. Big monitors, little monitors, cheapy and cheerful monitors ( Auratones are great - no bass ). Legend has it that Phil Spector used to listen back through transistor radio speaker, that was his target audience! Failing all that you just have to learn to compensate for the imbalance that you get with you PC speaker system.
